The clickety-clack of the train formed a distant background to Blake’s thoughts.  Leaving had been a bad idea, but staying would have been an even worse one.

“Are you going far?”

For a second the question meant nothing to Blake, just words skipping lightly above the rumble of the train.  Then his brain snapped out of its trance and he opened his eyes.

“Did I wake you?”

The eyes, staring back at him, were as blue as a summer’s day.  A single cloud darkened the marmoreal splendour of the forehead above them.  Blake shook his head and the cloud departed.

“I’m so glad.  I don’t like to disturb people.”

Blake nodded.  The exquisitely wrought face opposite melted into an apple-pie smile and bobbed like a child’s balloon.

“Will you be travelling with us all the way?”

Blake thought of the storm that had darkened his life, with its endless, raging fury.  The pills, and the vodka, had been his ticket to the land where the sun always shone, so why get off now the journey had begun?  He smiled and nodded again.

“I’m so glad,” the angel said.  “I really appreciate a willing travelling companion.”
