It was the beginning of fall, Jess and I have been looking at houses all day long. There was only one more house left to see, and we weren't satisfied with any of the previous ones. When we got to the last house we thought it looked beautiful. It was a three story house with four rooms, three bathrooms, and a basement. There was a huge backyard, I can already imagine the pool and the barbaques with the neighbors, and I bet Jess was already mapping out her garden. The basement had a weird smell and was covered in spider webs, Jess wouldn't even go down the stairs. Jess asked to see the kitchen, she loved cooking more than anything she was very vehement about cooking, so she was more than thrilled when she saw the gigantic kitchen. I knew for sure I wanted this house when we looked at the bedrooms. The room we picked out for us was amazing, there was a king size bed to the right, a jacuzzi in the corner of the room, and an eighty five inch television in front of the bed.

Mrs. Rogers looked at us and asked, “Is this the one you two have been looking for?”

Jess said with excitement, “ Yes this house is absolutely amazing.”

“It really is, I think we’ll take it.” I said with confidence.

I wrote out the check and gave it to Mrs. Rogers and she said, “Thank you so much you two are the first people I have ever sold a house to, I hope you have a great life living here.”

“I’m sure we will,” said Jess.

I smiled and said, “It’s hard to imagine that we just got married last month and now we're buying a house, it's crazy how time flies.”

Mrs. Rogers leaves saying, “Good luck and congratulations on the new marriage and house.” Jess and I both fall backwards on to the bed and just lay there in disbelief. I knew that this was going to be a great house for us. Later that night the moving truck was almost empty I had to carry one more box full of clothes in. When I came into the kitchen, the boxes were already unpacked and Jess was in the kitchen cooking dinner. She had cooked chicken thighs and green beans. After dinner we watched a movie in the living room and we went upstairs for bed. When Jess woke up she heard someone talking.

She looked over and saw me standing over the bed saying, “You're mine forever, if I cannot have you no one can.”

Jess was terrified and screamed, “Nick snap out of it!” I stopped and looked at her in confusion.

I asked, “What happened? Why does my head hurt so bad?”

“I woke up and you were just standing there saying that I’ll be yours forever,” said Jess with concern.

“What? Why would I be standing over you saying that and I don't remember any of it.” I replied.

“I don’t know, but I swear you were,” vowed Jess.

“Well it’s over now, so what do you want for breakfast, I’ll run to the store,” I suggested.

“Um, I would really love for some bacon and eggs right now,” Jess proposed.

“Alrighty then, I’ll head out now,” I exclaimed.

Once I had left Jess thought to herself, “What was he doing standing there like that, I wonder if he had a bad dream or something I really hope it isn’t deleterious to him. What if what he was doing was a sign of something bad like he’s going crazy or something.”

About ten minutes went by before I returned with the breakfast. When I entered the house I stopped about halfway to the kitchen. All I could see was blood. The whole living room was covered in blood, it was everywhere, it was on the furniture, the walls, and even the ceiling. “Sweetie,” Jess yelled, “Is that you Nick?” I heard Jess yell for me but I was to shocked to answer. When no one replied Jess walked towards the door only to find me standing there looking around the living room with a terrified look on my face. Jess looked to see what I was so scared about, and saw nothing, she saw no blood anywhere. She asked, “What are you looking at Nick.”

“Don’t you see the blood?” I questioned.

“What are you talking about there's not a drop of blood in this house,” Jess said proudly.

I looked at Jess, pointed towards the couch and said, “The couch is covered in blood, how don’t you see the blood?” I looked back at the couch and there was no blood. I looked around the room towards the wall and I looked up at the ceiling and the blood was evanescent, as if someone cleaned all of it up while I was looking at Jess. “Where did it all go, the blood, it’s gone, what happened?” I said with confusion

“Nick there was never any blood anywhere,” Jess said with concern, “Are you okay? Do you want to lay down or something? Do you want a glass of water?”

“No no, I’m fine let's just sit down and eat our breakfast,” I offered.

“Okay, are you sure you're okay? You’ve been acting really weird today,” Jess remarked.

“Yes im sure, im just enervated from all this moving,” I shouted.

“Okay I'm sorry,” said Jess. Before I sat down at the table I broke two eggs over the skillet and put some bacon on another and then I grabbed my mug of coffee that had a picture of Courage the Cowardly Dog on it. Jess sat down across from me and started reading one of her books. Reading was one of her favorite hobbies besides cooking. I think that was the sixth book this month but I can't keep count anymore. Reading all of those books made her very erudite. I got up a few minutes later and put her breakfast on a plate and set it in front of her. “Thank you,” Jess said with excitement. About five minutes later she asked, “How big was the store?” I just sat there in silence. She looked up at me and said, “Nick?” I still had no idea she was even talking so she yelled my name again and again. I finally looked up and she said, “I’ve been yelling your name, how haven’t you heard me?”

“I didn’t hear you, I’m sorry,” I apologized

I got up and went to the bathroom. I went to the sink and splashed water on my face to try and wake myself up. I leaned over the sink letting the water drip off of my face. All of the sudden the room smelled disgusting almost like a carrion. I looked up at the mirror and saw a man standing right behind me with blood all over his face and clothes holding a knife that was  also dripping in blood. The man was formidable he slowly raised the hand with the knife in it like he was getting ready to stab me right in the back. I turned towards him and screamed. When Jess came running in she found me standing there hyperventilating. She asked, “What’s wrong? Why are you screaming?”

“There was a man behind me with a knife covered in blood and he was about to stab me!” I said with candor.

“Nick there's no one in here and nobody came out of the bathroom, I would have saw them,” Jess said with confusion. She walked me out of the bathroom and put me on the couch and handed me the remote for the TV. I have felt extremely chagrin all morning and I just want this day to end, but little did I know my day would end sooner than I thought. Whenever we were settled on the couch, I felt different, like something took over me. The next thing I knew I was asking Jess to follow me to the bedroom, and when we got up stairs Jess looked at me and said, “Why did you want me to come up here with you?”

“Oh no reason,” I smirked. Once I said that I felt myself lunge at her, Jess ducked down when I came at her because she saw me coming.

“Nick, what are you doing?” Jess screamed.

“Nothing, just stay still,” I blurted out. I ran at her again, but this time I was lucky because the worst thing happened.

I… punched her, right in the face, and then I punched her again and she fell to the ground. I started to kick her until I heard her scream out, “WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM? WHAT IS GOING ON WITH YOU?”

“Jess... Are you okay?” I asked, “Oh my, this is all of my fault... I hurt you?” I was terrified of myself, how could I live with myself, I cannot believe I hurt her, I was so bestial. I ran into the bathroom as fast as could not looking behind me or saying a word to Jess. I grabbed a knife, and locked the bathroom door behind me.

“Nick, let me in!” Jess shouted, “It’s okay, just come out and we can talk about what happened.”

“NO, I HURT YOU AND THAT IS NOT OKAY, none of this is okay,” I roared, “I must pay for what I have done.”

“You don’t have to pay for anything Nick, just come out here and talk to me,” Jess pleaded. I heard the door knob start to move and I knew it was time.

“Jess I am sorry, but the voices have gotten too out of control, I must end it all,” I stated. As soon as Jess finally got the door open, it was too late. I slit my throat with the knife, and I watched myself bleed until I fell to the ground. With my last gasping breath I cried, “I love you, Jess.”

She replied, “And I love you, Nick.”
