As long as she could remember, Lindsay Carter has always got along with dear, Grandad Harold who is fun, a loving friend. Nurse assistant, Lindsay adores Grandmother Rose but Lindsay shares a true, special connection with Grandad. This cool misty April morning, Lindsay helps Mom hang birthday decorations for Grandad’s party, he will be seventy nine in two days. The livingroom is filled with yellow, red balloons, streamers and happy faces. Lindsay smiles, she recently decorated for her apartment neighbour Janet, twenty fifth birthday. Now, Lindsay has a call, it’s best friend Denise Foyer.
"Hey Lindsay, I’m at the mall, big sale on shoes! Ah, you better stop dreaming of intern Michael, your real sweetheart is cute Brian Telly, I saw him at a coffee shop. He asked if you’re going to that pub opening Friday, he likes you girl!!" Lindsay laughs, she thinks of Teresa, her cousin who has a big crush on Brian. Lindsay now sees a nearby book, Whisper at Dawn.
"I know! Oh, I’m working Friday evening. Today, my shift is at two. Don’t forget, Grandad’s birthday party is Thursday evening, he will be surprised. Dad is setting him up to be here. Call you later, Denise." Lindsay’s mom hands a package.
"Thanks for decorating, it’s nice! Here’s your favourite cookies, brownies too. I’ll be busy today, someone is coming over to look at the basement apartment, I promised to help my friend Alice move furniture around. Oh, can you drop off Aunt Rachel’s get well card, I still want to check our list for the party." Lindsay knows how busy her mom usually is.
"Ah, thanks Mom, great snack. Sure, I’ll drop off the card. Is Grandma going to that arts, crafts class? She is pretty good."
"That starts next week, today, she has senior’s exercise program, dancing too. Your Grandad will be over at his friend Doug’s garage, fixing things, painting, sandpapering. It’s what they love to do!" Lindsay asks of the book, Whisper at Dawn which her mom heartedly enjoyed. Lindsay takes it, she heads to Aunt Rachel. On the way, Lindsay thinks about the party.
Now, it’s especially nice to run into Teresa, her cousin.
"Hi Lindsay, I have a card for Aunt Rachel too. Oh, I must tell you, I found someone, sweet Kevin Hayden. I can’t wait for you to meet him! Brian is ok, but it’s better now!" Lindsay is happy. After, she meets Brian at a corner store, this is all crazy.
"Lindsay, great seeing you! Are you heading to the hospital, my uncle had a falling accident. I need a drive, my car stalled on me! My sister won’t pick up her phone. This isn’t my day, they don’t even have my uncle’s favourite mints!" He is anxious. Lindsay nods, she knows he needs some comfort.
"I can drive you, no problem. Buy the spearmint candy, it’s the best." Lindsay feels comfortable with him. Suddenly, the misty weather changes, it starts pouring rain. She and Brian run across the street to her car. Brian chuckles, they’re soaking wet.
"This is not April showers, it reminds me of my November, Graduation Day as a sales manager, it rained heavily. My sister Jessica won the fifteen hundred dollars draw that day. Jessica was so happy, she ran out dancing in the rain!" Lindsay laughs.
"I did the same thing when Grandad Harold won a year supply of popcorn last month. He guessed how many popcorn seeds in a jar, ninety two. Grandad and I danced in the rain! His birthday party is Thursday evening, I'm happily inviting you!" Brian is surprised, he nods with a smile. Before starting the car, windshield wipers, Lindsay now hears a soft, familiar voice. Brian notices a change.
"Ah Lindsay, you ok? You look frozen, turn the heat on."
"I thought I heard Grandad’s whisper, silly isn’t it!" She giggles as she eagerly heads on to the main street. Brian watches. Once they pass the town library, Lindsay hears the whisper again. She pulls into a side parking space. She looks worried.
"Oh my, something is wrong! He says, come quick!" Brian warmly taps her hand. He is helpful, caring at this moment.
"I’ll drive, tell me the street address. We will check this out." Lindsay is in awe, she is grateful for Brian. It’s close to two, Lindsay glances at the new book while calling Evelyn, her boss. After, Lindsay thinks about that special day she met Brian at a crowded basketball game, seventh of December. He kept offering Lindsay barbecue chips. Later, Teresa couldn’t get over Brian’s sweet personality. Now, Lindsay hears more whispering.
Soon, they’re at Doug’s garage. Lindsay feels nervous, a little scared. They run in, Lindsay sees Grandad sitting by Doug.
"Lindsay! I called for an ambulance, this phone has static! Doug has diabetics, must be the sandwich he had. I feel strange, I’m shaking!" Lindsay sighs, she calls 911. Brian is staring.
At the hospital, Brian comforts his uncle, Lindsay chats with Grandad. He felt weak, he didn’t take his medication today. After, sneaky Grandad hears of the party. A loud nurse talked to Lindsay. Grandad now sips tea as he waits for Mom, Grandma.
"Lindsay, I believe in a higher power, you heard me. Doug will be fine with rest. Oh, terrific cookies! I’m glad you met nice Brian, he will be at the party. I’ll bring popcorn!" She laughs.
"Yes, everything worked out alright. I will never forget this unique, wondrous day of a certain excitement!"
