The dance goes on till dusk,

Beside the brackish moat.

Here all paths converge—

Under the crumbling castle.

On foot and wheel, they pause;

Arrested by those flashing legs.

Loudly the idiot-savant shouts dictums;

The female hawker screams her chant.

Yet the sojourners gather on rocks and grass;

Their primal memory stirred

By echoes from distant harvest haunts,

Their grandfathers’ tales.

All through the strong sun,

Even when cool and damp invade,

The dedicated band, led by the sparkling virgin,

Proudly prances, till only a blur remains.

But our ears, our eyes still bounce,

Still spin long after they disappear.
