Diamonds In the Night

One cold night a bitter breeze blew hard and strong. The many clouds cast a pinkish tinge over the cool surroundings. Snow fell from the overcast sky. The air was suddenly still, the snow ceased its’ panicked dancing. A chill crept along Jacob’s spine as he waited, waited for someone to show up. He shivered once, as the wind resumed its’ assault on the air. Ten minutes passed, then twenty, half an hour. Jacob waited, not moving a muscle in the freezing cold. He felt the wind ruffle his hair. Cold nipped at every area of exposed skin. His face became numb, and then what he had been waiting for arrived. Jill came into view, walking slowly towards him. He started running to her as soon as he noticed the tears that adorned her cheeks. Jacob wrapped his arms around Jill and asked, “What’s wrong babe? Why are you crying?”

In a chocked sob she said, “It’s, it’s nothing,”

Her tears shown bright on her cheeks. He wiped away the tears with a clumsy, frozen thumb. Jacob hugged Jill tight. “Jill what’s wrong?” he asked.

“N-nothing,” she sighed, as new tears formed in her deep blue eyes. “It’s just,” The wind began to gust and swept away the rest of Jill’s words.

“What? What is it babe, you can tell me.”

In a chocked voice she uttered, “I just. I want it to stop. I just want it all to stop.” Her voice came to an almost inaudible whisper by the end.

“What? What do you want to stop?”

“Everything. I want…” she trailed off as she stared at the white, blanketed ground. Jill glanced to her left and new tears strolled down her cheeks. She felt Jacob’s warmth seep into her as he held her even tighter.

He pulled away slightly so he could look into Jill’s glistening blue eyes and said, “Jill. I love you, and I may be able to help. But I can’t unless you tell me what’s the matter. Just seeing you like this makes me want to weep with you, and have whomever is responsible for this pay hell. I want them to hurt for doing this to you Jill. I want to make it all better. I can’t, if you don’t tell me what the problem is though.”

In a sob Jill said, “I want it to stop. M-My, my parents.” She said with fresh tears decorating her face. The snow and wind whipped up and bit at the lovers’ faces. It chilled Jacob’s arms. There the two stood. Nothing but them locked in each other’s embrace. Jill buried her face in Jacob’s shoulder. He said nothing, but let her cry. He wanted to comfort her in any way possible. He waited for her to continue. Waited quietly, in the snow, as she cried tear after tear onto his shirt. After one more sniffle she looked into Jacobs eyes, just as he looked into hers. Then she began again. “My parents. They,” She said through a raspy double breath. “They. They make me feel so worthless sometimes. Like I’m not good enough. Like nobody could ever love me.” Bright tears began to flood her eyes, as she tried to subdue them behind closed eyes. “I want to stop feeling like this. I can’t though. Every.” She swallowed nervously then continued, “Every time I do anything, all I get is yelling.” In a faint undertone she added, “If I'm lucky.”

“What do you mean ‘If I’m lucky.’” he replied.

“Sometimes. Sometimes I get more than just harsh words,” said Jill.

“They. They hit you!” Jacob said. Jill nodded shyly. “I can’t believe that. Really? How? Why? How could they do that? How could anyone…” he trailed off as he thought back to every time he saw a bruise on Jill and wondered how it got there. “So is that why you are here tonight? Is that why you asked me to meet you here?” She nodded again. “I’m sorry babe,” he said as he embraced her once more. “I’m sorry Jill.” More tears came to Jill’s eyes. She shed more tears onto Jacob’s shirt. And he held her for what seemed a very long time. They stood together out in the snow, in the cold, together. Eventually Jill’s sobs ceased and she looked up at Jacob’s eyes. He gazed in to her glassy eyes as one might look at a newborn child, with adoration, gentleness, kindness and love.

At that moment Jill looked down at the ground and said, “I. I don’t want to deal with it anymore. I just. I want it to stop. I can’t.” She took a momentary pause, then continued speaking, “Last night, I was in my room, crying. I barely got any sleep. Then today I got up, ate some breakfast, and my mom starts yelling at me, for no reason. I can’t. I can’t d-deal with it anymore. Sleep never comes easy because I. I never know when the next time will be. I stay up for hours thinking about it. How much I don’t like it. I like to think. Think that it is not my fault. But sometimes I just can’t help it. Sometimes I think. Think I deserved it for some reason. I cannot fathom why but. There must be a reason. I can never. Never seem to please them. They never want me. Why don’t they want me?” And she sobbed. She sobbed until her emotions ebbed and left her as dry and hollow as an old barley husk. Jacob could do naught but hold her, hug her fiercely as she drown beneath a sea of raw emotion.

“But you are not alone. I will always be there for you Jill. Always. I am always with you right here,” he said as he placed his hand over Jill’s heart “Just as I am with you right now”. One last tear escaped Jill’s desolate eyes. It stayed on her cheek, glistening, like a diamond in the night. He wiped away that final tear and said, “I love you Jill more than anything. You have to know that. Now let’s go home.” They walked hand in hand back to Jacob’s house; once they got there they climbed into his bed and went to sleep, locked in each others loving arms.
