"Blake. Blake. Blake..." Her father's hoarse trailed off into the dark halls of her house. Blake was perched at her desk, pretending not to hear her father's calls. He called out again, but Blake begin dug her head into her book, blocking him out. She knew that if she went in there he would want her to bring him his bottle of bright red medicine, and that she would no doubt spill it all over her brand new dress. The party was about to start, and even if it wasn't, it was not her job to take care of her ailing father. That job belonged to her mother.

Mr. Kemp was a wealthy Texan man who struck it big when he found oil on his family's land about twenty years ago. He had been strictly a business man, letting his family come second to the job. Not that Mrs. Kendal Kemp minded. She was what most people would politely call a gold digger. Kendal had grown up a poor, yet very attractive girl, so when she turned eighteen she vowed she would make it to the top. Her path of choice was sticking her claws in an array of upper class men, looking for the right one who would give her everything her heart desired. She found that man in the form of Mr. Kemp. But instead of the Hugh Hefner fantasy she had in mind, her husband just gave her a credit card and called her to the bedroom ever so often. He was never around, always flying for business. They eventually "permanently" find a home in Maine, but the only permanent person was Kendal. She grew to loathe her life. She did not want only money, but the attention that came with being a trophy wife, attention that Mr. Kemp did not give her. She tried to find that with children, hoping to fulfill some void that she had had all of her life. Instead she found her two daughters, Blake and Isla, to be more a nuisance than little Barbie dolls that looked up to her.  After a few years, she hired a full time nanny to take care of her two daughters, while she looked for attention from somewhere else.

That was how she had formed a friendship with Robert White.
