I Travelled Wide

I travelled o’er the mountains high
The snow did cling to me
While summer dreams swam through my mind
And winds did tug at me

My thoughts did travel back in time
It’s strange how things unfold
I fought and killed in foreign lands
Yet never gave a thought

For as a youth I traveled wide
As nothing daunted me
Danger was my heart and soul
Restraint I ne’er did know

I drank, I wooed, and I gambled oft
For life - there was but one
There is many a girl with child I left
Not ever more to see

Yet years passed, and lessons learnt
Alas they ne’er did end
The molding, breakings, took their toll
My recklessness I left

Yet, life consist of trials and tests
No resting place we find
To stop is death - I cannot cease
I found an inner strength

I struggle through adversity
Yet not as when a youth
Each test doth stretch my faith and strength
Each day I fight anew

Yet master of the hour I be
For now an inner power do know
Its strength doth lift me o’er them all
My trust stands on a rock

Though great my towering problems be
Though endless seem life’s woes
Yet through this inner strength I’ll win
The victory I’ll embrace
