Old Tony
Damn life can be rough!
I sat there on the windy bench,
The birds were hopping by,
Looking for a handout.
Well tough! Nothing here!
Yet I could sympathise,
Heck I was in the same boat,
Brother can you spare a dime,
Not many can these days.
Mary slept under the tarpaulin,
It was used for the flower- bed,
Jimmy he could sleep anywhere,
Me the bench was my choice,
If I made it on time ha!
Wet, miserable, and dark and hungry,
So another day began.
Throwing my scraggy old blanket into the plastic bag,
I stretched!
I yawned!
I rubbed my eyes!
I scratched myself!
I toddled off!
Ernie was sitting outside the café,
Begging cup in hand,
Not a good morning he sighed.
I wandered on,
There was Ian hobbling on his one leg,
He grinned showing his gums,
Years since any teeth were there.
I walked on, some kids laughed and pointed,
One brave kid threw a stone,
No one cared!
Who are we!
The invisible or so they wished,
The lost, the dead, the off scouring,
Tomorrow they may join our ranks.
Hell Old Davie was a CO,
Barrie once ran a chain of shops,
Me well even I forget.
My spot was near the Underground,
Constant change there was.
Today though wet and miserable,
Still dinner I could be assured.
A dog began to bark!
Its owner laughed at me,
He cursed and gave the mutt a kick,
Then glared once more at me.
A kind old lady dropped a coin,
The cop he walked on by.
There was Reggie on the prowl,
He just got out last week,
I give another day or two,
He’ll be inside the nick.
Someone dropped their old fag end,
I scrambled over quick,
Amazing how they disappear,
I sat with prize in hand.
A passerby gave me a light,
He also dropped a coin.
Not bad I thought today is good,
I puffed and gave a sigh.
