The Cloak of Dejection

I sit in the corner dank and damp
The shadows comfort me
My tears they sting, my body shakes
Despondency my coat

Anguish, pain, and torment come
Their words crash like the waves
Drowning now in waters deep
Despair hath flooded all

Remorse is like a fog so thick
Regret is ever there
My life seems lost in sorrow’s arms
The pit of no return

I’m chained within a dungeon dank
The chains - I forged each link
My deeds and choices, whims and faults
Each form a link of all

The more I think, the more I sink
Like quicksand drags me down
Into the mire and filth below
My screams doth no one hear

The piper plays, the fiddler laughs
The joker sings his song
The time draws near, the payments due
To reap what has been sown

And yet I hear a whisper faint
It almost disappeared
A spark of light - a ray of hope
Though flimsy like a web

What’s written need not come to be
The future has yet to come
The books not closed, a page has turned
The end is yet to pen
