The Cry of the Banshee

Death, death, death, the air was filled with doom,
A wail of more than mortal angst,
Echoing through the wind,
A song that heralds death to one
Its eerie voice did moan
All through the dark cold night it screamed
The howls did rip my soul,
As I looked at the jet black sky
My soul did shake within
And thus in supplication knelt
To beg for life for all
Now darkness filled my fearful soul
As shrieks did harmonise
Throughout the midnight hours they joined,
A concert of the dead
Piercing cries from the shadowed land
Filled all the emerald glens
Till rays of light cracked though the dark
A silence everywhere
Upon the rising of the sun
We woke with fear and dread
For all that night we’d heard dooms voice
The warning wails of fate
Her voice it sang for all to hear
Hells gates were open wide
The fires burned so bright within
Its warmth did fill the halls
If we don’t fly with feet so swift
Our fate is sealed indeed
Ha, now I wonder at that thought
Can we avoid what’s writ
Oh self-conceited fools we be
To think that death could cheat
Ring out laments from shore to shore
Wails now our Banshee white
To late we know her song was true
Our king now bloody lay
Upon his ancient oaken throne
The king was laid now low
A mortal blow - a traitor’s cut
Had laid him in his grave
As tears ran free and cries rose high
A howl unearthly came
Out yonder in the oaken woods
Or was it closer by?
Is she near me - a shiver stabbed?
Is it her voice I hear?
Or was it but the skirling wind
That howled through chambers cold
Maybe the harp in ancient groves
Was plucked by wild winds
As laments play we dance with fate
Death’s job now done she left
Until she next was called to sing
The Banshee now was gone
The Otherworld had opened up
The door again was closed
