Within the Café Walls

I sit within the Café walls,
The smoke it stings my eyes.
Damn, how it smarts, I thought right then,
A tear rolled down my cheek.
I took another puff then blew,
I smiled and watched it flow.
A ring of smoke twirled in the air,
Now music waltzed with me.
Sayif played his oud with fire,
Notes of mystic brew.
Bashir’s fingers move in time,
The tablah is his heart.
Sweet notes the nay did bring to me,
They lift my thoughts on high.
In Casablanca’s late night Café,
I join the busy throng.
Majid smoked his nargilla now,
Its fruity smoke surrounds.
Enveloping me in atmosphere,
I breath it deeply in.
Firdaus danced her hips did sway,
Enticing one and all.
I sipped my cup of coffee hot,
My eyes they followed her.
Candles flickered in the breeze,
I ate my shawarma now.
Some foul beans and hommus dips,
More khubs they soon did come.
My thoughts did travel back in time,
I once heard Fairuz, sing.
A voice; oh like an angel sweet,
It brought me peace of mind.
As thoughts return once more to me,
The past seemed so alive.
Beruit it was in ’68,
A moment set in stone.
I look around the busy room,
The café has sprung to life.
Patrons come and linger on,
Until it's closing time.
I wander home in cool night air,
I stroll the cobbled streets.
Music lingers all around,
It walks with me back home.
