  COLD OPEN:

INT. THE SHOP - DAY

We open to THE SHOP KEEPER in a pose, turned away from the camera, holding a skull.

Shop keeper

...to be, or not to be: that is the question. Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer...(BEAT, OBSERVES THE CAMERA) I've always wondered to what Shakespeare was suffering himself when he wrote this. Did he feel it would of been nobler to suffer for his guilt? Sometimes we inflict guilt to mask our true identity.

FADE IN:

INt. interrogation room - night

We open to a single lamp overshadowing a table. The room is completely DARK and ominous. You feel as almost there is something hidden in the shadows.

TIMOTHY, 20's, handsome, dressed preppy, his face buried in his palms, hair intertwined in his fingers, appears to have been crying for some time now.

DETECTIVE STEVENS, 50's, rugged looking, bares a five o'clock shadow, wearing a white dress shirt and slacks, walks back and forth slowly.

detective stevens

Let's go over this one more time.

TIMOTHY

I already told you everything.

DETECTIVE JOHNSON, 30's, wearing a button up shirt and slacks, young hot to go type, staring down Timothy.

DETECTIVE STEVENS

Problem is your story doesn't quite add up. You see, you keep going on and on about some mysterious girl you claimed to have picked up.

Detective Stevens looks back at Detective Johnson with a smug expression.

TIMOTHY

(SHOUTING) I'm telling you the truth.

Detective Stevens walks by Timothy.

DETECTIve Johnson

Right.

Timothy slumps down, defeated.

After a beat.

DETECTIVE JOHNSON

Let's start from the beginning.

Beat.

CROSS DISSOLVE TO:

ext. highway - night

On a dark and unsettling chilly winters night. The moonlight bursts through the trees. The night filled with the sounds of various insects, distinguishing the mood of the woods that surround the road.

A single car comes barreling down the road in the distance, kicking up dirt and dust as it passes. The engine echo's through the open road.

CUT TO:

INT. CAR. NIGHT (MOMENTS LATER)

Timothy, sitting in the passenger's side, earplugs in, staring out his window, oblivious to the present.

LYDIA, late 20's, long hair that compliments her angelic features, in the driver's side who also appears fed up.

lydia

What's the turn off I'm supposed to be looking for?

Timothy doesn't respond.

LYDIA

Tim?

Still no response from Tim.

Lydia glances over, notices he's not paying attention. She then reaches over and rips out one ear bud.

Timothy jumps up. Annoyed.

TIMOTHY

What the hell is your problem?

LYDIA

I've been calling you. What's the turn off?

TIMOTHY

(ANNOYED) You know a TAP goes a long way.

Timothy puts the ear buds back in. Lydia rips the one closest to her out.

LYDIA

If the whole point on inviting me on this trip was to ignore me, I wish you had gone into detail before hand.

TIMOTHY

Hey I told you I could have taken the bus, but you insisted that we spend some quality time together.

LYDIA

I haven't seen you for months. Is it so wrong of me that I wanted to spend some time with my little brother?

TIMOTHY

Not like we did before.

LYDIA

That was when we were kids. We're older now and...

TIMOTHY

..and still have nothing in common.

Timothy slouches in the seat. Lydia looks over, she seems to have a little bit of sympathy now.

BEAT.

LYDIA

(SYMPATHETIC) Then maybe this is a perfect time to start.

Timothy let's out a huge sigh, then takes the other ear bud out and puts the earphones away.

TIMOTHY

Fine. Let's talk shall we. (BEATLast month Teresa, you remember her right? My fiance, well ex fiance. She's having a baby...with another man. Great right?! I  got evicted from my apartment and now I have to move back..with mom and dad! And on top of that I have this really horrible rash down the crack of my ass. How's it going for you?

Lydia sitting there in almost complete silence, she's barely able to look at her brother.

TIMOTHY

That's what I thought.

After a beat...

LYDIA

I'm really sorry about.

TIMOTHY

Don't okay, just don't. I don't need anyone's pity. I especially don't need yours.

LYDIA

I wasn't pitying you.

TIMOTHY

Of course you are. Everyone else does. (MOCKING) Oh poor Timmy. His girlfriend broke his heart and he tried to kill himself.

LYDIA

You tried to kill yourself?

Timothy freezes when he realizes he didn't mean to tell Lydia about his attempted suicide.

TIMOTHY

Forget it.

LYDIA

When did this happen?

At this moment Lydia takes her attention off of the road.

TIMOTHY

I said forget it. I don't want to talk about it.

LYDIA

I may not have been there for you as I should have been, but I'm here now.

Something catches Timothy's attention ahead. A figure up ahead is standing in the middle of the road.

TIMOTHY

Lydia.

Lydia

I know it doesn't make up for the past, but you can't keep shutting me out.

TIMOTHY

LYDIA!

Lydia turns around, GRABS the wheel, SLAMS on the brakes, and swerves a hard left to avoid hitting the figure standing in the middle of the road.

CUT TO:

EXT. HIGHWAY - NIGHT

SHELLY, a drifter, wearing an Army jacket that hangs on her, carrying a backpack, dressed like she just left a ACDC concert, glares as it swerves off the road.

The car comes to a screeching a ways down.

CUT TO:

INT. CAR. NIGHT (MOMENTS LATER)

Lydia and Timothy both try to regroup.

Timothy seems to be a little shaken up. Moving around slowly, clearly having pain in his neck.

Lydia out of breathe, checking herself for any cuts or damage. She looks over at Timothy.

LYDIA

You okay?

TIMOTHY

My neck is killing me but I'm alright. Are you okay?

LYDIA

(LOOKING OVER HERSELF) Yeah I think so.

Shelly on the outside, knocks on Lydia's window, startling both Lydia and Timothy.

Lydia rolls her window down.

Shelly

(PEPPY) Hiya doll.

LYDIA

(ANGRY) What the hell is wrong with you? Walking in the middle of the road this time of night.

Shelly looks back where they swerved, then looks back at Lydia.

SHELLY

(STILL DULL) Which way you headed?

LYDIA

What?

Timothy leans over.

TIMOTHY

We're headed West.

CUT TO:

EXT. HIGHWAY/CAR - NIGHT

LYDIA

(ANNOYED) Sorry. We don't have any room.

Shelly glances in the back seat.

SHELLY

Seems like plenty of space.

Shelly looks over at Timothy, biting her bottom lip, giving him a wink.

Timothy smiles back at her.

TIMOTHY

We have plenty of room.

Lydia glares at Timothy, clearly she doesn't agree with his statement.

SHELLY

Groovy.

Shelly gets in back. Lydia sits there, completely uncomfortable with her joining them.

CUT TO:

INT. INTERROGATION ROOM - NIGHT

DETECTIVE STEVENS

And you just let some strange woman get in. No questions asked.

TIMOTHY

You don't understand. There was something about her. She just seemed...special.

DETECTIVE STEVENS

(SARCASTIC) Special huh.

CUT TO:

INT. CAR. NIGHT (WHILE HAS PASSED)

TIMOTHY

So where you headed?

Shelly just sitting there, looking out the window, ignoring Timothy.

Timothy and Lydia look at each other.

TIMOTHY

I'm Timothy, most people call me Tim. This is my sister Lydia.

Shelly doesn't acknowledge.

Lydia doesn't acknowledge.

After sometime of silence, Shelly perks up.

SHELLY

So what's the deal between you two?

Timothy and Lydia glance at each other confused.

LYDIA

If you were listening you would of heard that we are related.

SHELLY

(INTERRUPTING) No I mean what's the deal? There's some kind of issue here.

LYDIA

What are you talking about? There's no issue.

SHELLY

You're lying. I can feel it.

LYDIA

I don't know what you're talking about. And even if I did, that's not even any of your business.

SHELLY

If I'm going to ride with a couple of strangers, I should at least know why one of them has visions of killing the other.

LYDIa and timothy

WHAT?!

TIMOTHY

No one wants to kill anyone.

SHELLY

(SITTING IN THE BACK RELAXED) That's not true.

LYDIA

Yes it is.

SHELLY

No it's not.

LYDIA

Look lady, I don't know who the hell you think you are or what you think you know but my brother and I are fine.

SHELLY

Really? (BEAT) Then why does he often imagine himself fucking you?

LYDIA

What?!

Timothy doesn't speak at all. He just sits there silent. Looking as though he's actually guilty.

SHELLY

Tell her Timothy.

LYDIA

What's she talking about Timothy?

TIMOTHY

Nothing.

SHELLY

Come on Timothy, tell her. Now's your chance to tell her how you really feel. Those nights you spent hiding in her closet, watching her undress..

TIMOTHY

(GETTING ANGRY) You don't know what you're talking about.

Lydia shivers from the thought of her brother dreaming of her. Lydia is filled with disgust and disturbance to her very core.

SHELLY

(SIMULATING THE ACTION) The smell of her cherry blossom perfume, running your fingers through her long silky hair. All while the thought of yourself deep inside her sweet little...

Lydia SLAMS on the BRAKES and pulls over to the side of the road, kicking up dust and dirt.

LYDIA

Get out!

SHELLY

What's the matter? It's perfectly normal for a brother to fantasize about the satisfaction he'd take pounding the life out of his sister.

Timothy almost curls up in a ball in his seat.

LYDIA

I said get out!

Lydia, fed up, gets out of the car, yanks the back door open. REVEAL: Shelly has disappeared.

LYDIA

Where did she go?

Timothy turns around.

TIMOTHY

She was right there.

Timothy gets out of the car and helps Lydia look around in the backseat.

Lydia and Timothy scramble around searching the backseat for Shelly. Not even her backpack is there.

LYDIA

Where is she?

TIMOTHY

(SHRUGGING HIS SHOULDERS) I don't know..

SHELLY(O.C.)

Looking for something?

Lydia and Timothy perk up, look at one another, lift their heads over the back of the head rests, they see Shelly standing in front of the car.

Shelly very nonchalantly, twirls the car keys on her finger.

Shelly expresses a charismatic smile, and takes off into the woods.

LYDIA

Hey!

Lydia takes off almost immediately after Shelly.

TIMOTHY

What are you doing?!

Lydia doesn't respond, she's almost impossible to see now.

Timothy hesitates at first, then follows her into the barely visable woods.

CUT TO:

EXT. WOODS - NIGHT

Timothy slowly makes his way through the woods. He calls out to his sister.

TIMOTHY

(WHISPERS) Lydia. (BEAT) Lydia!

After a moment.

LYDIA(O.C.)

Ahhh!!!!

TIMOTHY

LYDIA!

Timothy takes off in the direction he heard the scream.

Timothy breaks through the woods. Twigs snapping, leaves rustling in the wind, Timothy breathing heavily trying to follow the direction he thinks he heard Lydia.

Moments have passed and Timothy has searched high and low for Lydia. Still nothing. He collapses, out of breathe.

CUT TO:

EXT. HIGHWAY/CAR - NIGHT

Timothy, stumbles out of the woods, barely able to stay on his feet. Sweat pouring from his forehead.

Timothy walks around to the driver's side and grabs the keys out of the ignition.

Timothy heads to the back of the car, and opens the trunk.

REVEAL: Lydia lays in the trunk, lifeless. Her body covered in blood. It appears she's been stabbed multiple times.

Timothy pukes. Coughing, clearly in shock, he starts to look around, eyes start to well up with an expression on his face like, "what the hell is going on?". He shuts the trunk quickly to get rid of the sight.

SHELLY

What did you do?

Timothy looks up, barely able to make out who it is, wipes his eyes. Blurry he can see it's Shelly.

Timothy cautiously walks towards Shelly.

TIMOTHY

You. You did this.

SHELLY

I didn't do anything.

Timothy grabs Shelly by the throat and slams her up against the car. Shelly seems amused.

TIMOTHY

(ANGRY) You fucking bitch!

SHELLY

Seems you've got a bit of a problem.

TIMOTHY

(LAUGHS A LITTLE, THEN) You killed my sister you fucking bitch. You're going to fucking rot in hell for this.

SHELLY

(LAUGHING) Who's going to believe you? The cops?

TIMOTHY

For starters.

SHELLY

Don't be so sure.

TIMOTHY

Oh yeah. And why's that?

SHELLY

Your fingerprints are on the murder weapon.

TIMOTHY

Bullshit!

SHELLY

Check your back pocket.

Timothy reaches into his back pocket, feels around for a knife. He pulls it out and looks at it, feeling very shocked.

Suddenly police lights flash.

SMASH CUT TO:

INT. INTERROGATION ROOM - NIGHT

Timothy is sitting across from Detectives Johnson and Stevens.

TIMOTHY

I told you everything.

DETECTIVE STEVENS

Somethings not quite adding up.

TIMOTHY

I've told you everything.

DETECTIVE JOHNSON

The girl you said you picked up.

TIMOTHY

Yeah?

DETECTIVE JOHNSON

The same one we couldn't find.

TIMOTHY

Yeah?

DETECTIVE STEVENS

Shelly right? (beat) When the officer's found you, you kept telling them your name was Timothy.

TIMOTHY

Yeah, so.

DETECTIVE STEVENS

So, according to our records, your name is Shelly.

TIMOTHY

What? What the fuck are you talking about?

DETECTIVE JOHNSON

Shelly Matthews formerly Shelly Dumar. Born August 2nd, 1991. Adopted at the age of 5 to John and Linda Matthews. September 1st 2011, you opted for sex reassignment surgery. At the age of 15 you were diagnosed with Dissociative identity disorder.

Timothy looks at the detective like he's confused.

DETECTIVE STEVENS

Split personality.

Suddenly the room begins to spin for Timothy. He can't believe what he's hearing. It doesn't make any sense to him.

TIMOTHY

That's impossible.

Detective Johnson flings a folder across the table. Timothy rummages through the papers and photos.

Timothy examines every single photo. It's obvious it's difficult for him to focus going through the pictures.

SUPERIMPOSE MONTAGE FLASHES:

Timothy attempting to make moves on Lydia i.e., telling her she's beautiful while playing with her hair, trying to cop a feel making her uncomfortable and causing Lydia to pull over, then ensues a fight.

Timothy stabbing Lydia.

Timothy dragging her body.

Timothy standing over Lydia's bloodied body in the trunk, then shutting the trunk.

SMASH CUT TO:

INT. INTERROGATION ROOM - NIGHT

Timothy can't grasp reality.

DETECTIVE STEVENS

Tell you what I think. I think your "sister" wasn't into whatever weird, incest Caitlin Jenner shit you were trying to start.

TIMOTHY

(VERY SUBTLE) No.

DETECTIVE STEVENS

She prefers a man--well a real man. One with an actual dick.

TIMOTHY

(STILL SUBTLE) Shut up.

DETECTIVE STEVENS

(INTIMIDATING) She tried to get you to lay off her, but you couldn't accept that. She embarrassed you so you killed her.

TIMOTHY

(WELLING UP, ANGRY) NO.

SUPERIMPOSE:

Reaction of Lydia's face after being stabbed multiple times.

DETECTIVE STEVENS (o.c.)

You stabbed her over and over and over again.

TIMOTHY

(BURST WITH ANGER) NO!

Detectives Johnson and Stevens both take a step back to observe that reaction from Timothy.

Timothy collapses onto the table. He appears completely lost and delusional. He starts to mumble nonsense.

DETECTIVE STEVENS

Let's suppose Shelly isn't you for a second. What did she look like?

A beat. Then Timothy starts in...

TIMOTHY

I don't know----Short black hair, 'bout five foot two or three, kinda looked like she might have been hitch hiking for awhile now.

Detective Steven's looks over at Detective Johnson, then Steven's sits down across from Timothy holding something in his hand.

DETECTIVE STEVENS

She look like this?

Detective Stevens places a photo of Shelly and Lydia side by side, posing together. Looks to be taken some time ago.

TIMOTHY

That's her!

DETECTIVE JOHNSON

That's you.

TIMOTHY

My name is Timothy! Look!

Timothy starts to undo his pants, while he's in such a rush, he begins to feel around only to then realize he doesn't have what he thought he did in the pelvic area. Timothy looks in his pants, nothing there.

TIMOTHY

What the fuck..

Timothy after a moment, falls back onto the chair.

Beat. Then..

DETECTIVE STEVENS

You're a very pretty woman Shelly.

TIMOTHY

(LOOKS UP) What?

DETECTIVE JOHNSON

Very pretty. I bet all the boys loved you.

TIMOTHY

(BURYING HIS FACE IN HIS PALMS) Stop it.

DETECTIVE STEVENS

Shelly.

Timothy desperately buries his face in his palms.

TIMOTHY

No.

DETECTIVE STEVENS

I bet Lydia had it coming. She never did respect you for who you really are.

Timothy's antsy movements come to a complete stop. His face is still buried.

DETECTIVE STEVENS

She's just like everyone else huh? All you wanted was for her to recognize you for who you are, as a man. But they wouldn't do that. So you did what you had to do.

We start from the back, only visible is dark hair, a head slowly rising.

After a couple of moments...

DETECTIVE JOHNSON

Hi Shelly.

We pan all the way around from the back of the head of Timothy, to the shoulder of Detective Johnson to reveal: it's been Shelly the whole time sitting in the chair.

SHELLY

Hiya doll.

CROSS DISSOLVE:

INT. THE SHOP - DAY

A LOUD SCREAM is heard off screen.

SHOP KEEPER

Keep it down back there. Some of us are trying to think here. (BEAT, REGROUPS) Seems Timothy couldn't keep his hands to himself. (CHUCKLES, CLEARS THROAT)...til next time.

CUT TO BLACK.
