Daring to be Determined

"Dare to be a Daniel, dare to stand alone, dare to make a purpose firm, dare to make it known." What comes to mind when you read that quote? I think about determination. Determination is standing by something you believe in even when you are standing by yourself. Ephesians 6:10 says this,” Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.” God will lead you. All you have to do is follow.

Derek Redmond was an ordinary person with a big dream. His goal was to win the 1992 Barcelona Olympic's 400 meter run. Unfortunately, halfway through the race, Derek fell to the ground with a torn hamstring. He refused help from his father and simply said, “I've got to finish the race.” In reply, his father told him,” ….We'll finish it together.” Side by side, holding each other up, they finished the last 200 meters. Derek received a standing ovation of over 65,000 fans. I have heard similar stories, and I'm pretty sure I would do the same thing. What about you? Would you stay devoted to what you started, or would you tell yourself it was too hard? I used to always think about quitting track, but I never have. I love running; I just don't like working to get better. Whenever I think about giving up, I imagine something extraordinary. I imagine God running beside me, and telling me to press on – to never quit. However, I feel as if He isn't only talking about the running race.

Everybody wants to win the race of life. People think that their lives are so good that disasters and tragedies won't happen to them. The first thing you should know is that's not true. Bad things do happen to good people. “In this world you will have trouble, but take heart! I have overcome the world.” - John 16:33. The truth is, when these troubles arrive you have to stay determined in order to finish the race. Without perseverance, not a lot of things can be accomplished. For example, go back in time to the Civil Rights Movement. You are a black teenager who is dealing with all the grief you could ever expect to have in a lifetime. The blacks fought for what was right, but what if they hadn't? What if people just sat around being couch potatoes all day? What if they did nothing? Not much would change, would it? No, it wouldn't. Because the blacks were determined throughout the entire process, the world is that much of a better place. It may not seem like it, but the little things in life do matter. Although, if you want things to change, you have to stay determined.

What do you call two banana peels? A pair of slippers. Another thing you should know about never giving up is teamwork. If you have heard the saying “Two is better than one”, then you know what I'm talking about. Every summer I play on the youth soccer team with a lot of other kids. One of the first things I learned about the game was passing. In order to score a goal, you need to pass the ball to your teammates. This past year, our team had some trouble with passing. A few of the boys refused to give the ball to us girls. When they did, however, we scored more points and won more games. Better than that, we learned a very important lesson. There is no 'I' in team. We also became friends with more people. I know a lot of people say that the power of one is a great thing and it is, but sometimes you need backup. If you want to make a difference, you can always turn to the One who will always be there no matter what. Joshua 1:5 says this: “........I will never leave you nor forsake you.” The Lord will be there wherever you go. You can't hide from the Creator. I mean, its literally impossible. If you want someone to help you make a difference, find a friend and start making the plans! This world could always use a little more change.

In my opinion, daring to be determined is one of the best choices a person can make. When people battle cancer, they choose to be determined. When a little boy wants a new bike, he chooses to be determined. When people make fun of others, the victims choose to be determined. Overall, I believe determination is a part of life. Something we can't ignore. People go around thinking their world is fine, but that isn't always true. The next day, you could hear some of the worst news imaginable or have to face a tragedy, but you can't face these things without facing God. You have to be determined throughout the entire process. Determined to always choose life, determined to keep your faith in the Lord, determined to ride out the tough times, and determined to stay determined. Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me.” Stick by that verse, keep on loving God, and do one more thing. Dare.
