For my tenth birthday, my dad let me lease a horse for one year. I couldn't believe my eyes! This was the best thing ever. We contacted a bunch of different ranches and finally chose one. A nice Arabian breeding stable in the mountains.

I got three different horses to choose from. Zita, a mare who was flighty and spooky, which would have been a problem because I was not a very good rider at the time. Cody, a horse who bit, kicked, and had zero motivation to go. Or Sassy, the perfect little mare who could do anything and was cute as a button. Of course I fell in love with Sassy, and I loved her dearly. We did trail rides, jumped over little stuff, and had a great time together.

I leased her for maybe six months. Then we got a call saying I couldn't lease her anymore, and that she would be moving away. I did NOT want that to happen. So we did a lot of talking and decided that I was going to buy Sassy as my own. The lady who used to own her said that all along she felt like she was riding MY horse. I was thrilled!

Though we did have many ups and downs in the first few months. Changing ranches, instructors, finding tack that fit, etc., was all very hard. But we finally found the perfect place, fitting tack, and instructors that I could not live without.

So we moved her to a beautiful little ranch, and we have come so far. Two years later, we are jumping, showing, trail riding, and loving life. She has the best ground manners of any horse on the property. In the first show we ever did together, we took second place.

About a year into having her as mine, I realised that Sassy actually wanted to be with me, to follow me and be ridden. That is not too common. She loves her work, and is a great horse.

She is definitely what I spend much of my life thinking about!
