She sat on the edge, gazing below.

The river was down,

The current, slow.

This would be it, her life would end.

This was the price.

Betrayal from a friend.

“If you jump, your life costs two.

For when you go,

I’ll follow you.”

Who was this, slowly she turned.

She wanted to be alone,

When would they learn?

“Come back down, let us talk.

If I can’t help,

Then I’ll walk.”

She eyed the lad, as she stepped down.

What could he say?

The school house clown?

Her lips held a sneer, “Just go away,

Leave me alone,

Is what I pray.”

“Can’t do that, “ was his reply,

“Can’t stand by,

And watch you die.”

“You’ve been betrayed, by someone near.

Your heart’s been broken,

By someone dear.”

“But ask yourself, a final line.

For him to cause this,

Was he worth the time?”

For another to say, she laughed, then cried.

All this for vanity,

All this for pride.

To safety she stepped, to his waiting arms.

No longer the clown,

Protected her from harm.

Troubled times, from teenage years.

A time ne’er forgotten,

That brought teenage tears.
