I am an outcast in my neighborhoodof California.Im what you call different. I dont do things normally. My mother says nothing about it though. My name is Elena, I’m sixteen, and I can read minds.

I found out I could read minds when I was ten. It was hard to control at first. All I heard were voices in my head, I thought I was going crazy, but as I got older I realized I wasn’t. When I went to class one day, I heard a girl that was across the room; it didn’t sound good. Everyone knew about it, but no one really bothered with me. I blew it off as nothing and went home like always.

We were all in bed sound asleep until that's when I heard it. The door was kicked down, figures rushed around, and I didn’t make a sound. Glasses, plates, and lamps were all knocked down; loud crashes I never wanted to hear. That was when they barged into my room. I screamed for my mother.

Mom!” I screamed while listening for a response.

Please, no!” she yelled to them as her voice faded into the distance.

I blacked out from fear. When I finally came about, all I saw was a dark room. There was no light, no windows, no noises, nothing at all. I knew then that I had to get out.
