Nafaya only remembers a little of her childhood, and her real birth mother. Nafaya knew that her mother didn't just abandon her and her father, and she was going to get the truth one way or another. Nafaya always knew she was different beyond the purple of her eyes. As winter hits, Nafaya knows what comes along with it. Every year Nafaya's evil step-mother host a Christmas eve ball, where Nafaya is required to put on a fake smile and dance with people she barely knows. But now that Nafaya is eighteen and nearly done with the private school her father was forced to send her to, her step-mothers only goal is to marry her off and ship her away for good. So when Nafaya finds herself fleeing the area and trying to avoid all the questions, and drooling boys trying to win her heart through money. When Nafaya stumbles across a hidden door hiding behind one of the hanging rugs, she doesn't hesitate to explore where it leads. Nafaya finds herself walking down the spiral stair case that leads to a large stone wall with strange carvings all over it. For some reason Nafaya remembers seeing those symbols, as she grabs the pendant around her neck and begins to think about her mother, and without warning Nafaya is transported from where she is standing to a world where she thought she had created as a child. Nafaya realizes that this is where her mother is, as her memories begin to flow back to her. Wondering around in her oversized ball gown Nafaya wonders above a young man bathing in the stream. Here Nafaya meets Echo and young traveler who agrees to help her get to the Kingdom of Ephedra. Though the two butt heads multiple times along the way, they can't deny the attraction they have for each other. When Nafaya is finally reunited with her mother, she is beyond thrilled. But the time they have together may be short. When Nafaya learns that the queen of witches is back and is after her throne. Nafaya and her mother are thrown into a battle she wasn't ready for. And she isn't sure she is going to survive.
