Little Micheal never knew his mother for long. The only thing he remembered her by was her warm smile that can kept him calm whenever he's nervous about something. The way she made him feel safe and happy during his bad days or whenever he fell of his bike. Yet, one day, bad news came to him as his principle took him out of his class and drove him to the hospital. His mother got hurt when she was shopping. A shelve from the super market fell and crashed onto her. She surfered severe injuries and intense bleeding and may live no more. For the last few moments when little Mike spent with his mother, she assured him that she would be fine, that everything is ok and that he shouldn't cry as he is a big boy and he must stay strong no matter what. From hearing those sweet words from his mother, Micheal, a face full of tears looked at her for the last time, as she forced a last smile before the light of her eyes fade away. Micheal was only ten years old.

When Mike turned twelve, his grandmother left him a necklace in her will after her death. When he opened it, the necklace cracked open and contains a picture of him and his mother together when he was still a toddler. A note was in it. "For my baby boy, whenever you are sad, keep this close to your heart as I will always support you, help you and confort you. Mommy will always love you. Forever and Ever." After reading this, Mike burst into tears. The last memory of his mother left to him.

For the past few years after his mother passed away, his father became unemployed, then a drunk. Whenever he drinks too much, he will start swearing at Micheal, and sometimes beat him. Mike never contacted authorities as his father was the only family he has left. However, whenever he feels sad and hurt, he hugs the neckless really tight to his heart to feel the warmth and protective shield his mother provided him with the pendant.

One night, his father came home worse than usual. He started to beat his son with his belt as he watched him suffer in pain and crying, he took joy in it. When he got tired of it, he took Mike's neckless and threw it in the fire pit. By the sight of the last memory of his mom left him melt in the rowing flame, he stood up, face his father and screamed "I hate you! Why do you have to be so cruel!"

"Why don't you grow a pair of god damn balls and become a man! You fucking coward!" Protested his father. Once his father finished his sentence, Mike charged at him, full of hatred, with his firsts ready to strike as hard as he can on the drunken man standing in front of him. Right before he reached his father's stomack, a strong punch threw him off. Slamming his body on the floor, as he lay there with pain and tears, his father left the room by saying "stupid piece of shit. Make something out of your sissy ass life."

Ever since that night, Mike was even sadder than he used to be. At school, he don't talk to anyone. He sits at the end of each classroom and he eat alone during lunch time. Until the day when he was in senior year, everything changed in his life.

One day, a new girl arrived at his school. She was gorgeous. She was tall, athletic body, long and thin legs with beautiful blond hair and blue eyes. All the guys stared at her, and all the girls were jealous of her. One day, during lunch time, as usual, Mike was sitting alone in the playground, eating his sandwich and sipping his water. That day, the new girl came and sat next to him. "Hi! My name is Rachel. May I join you for lunch?" Mike nodded in excitement as the prettiest girl in his high school was having lunch with him. As she engaged in a conversation, Mike was amazed on how sweet and lovely Rachel is. During the whole hour, they both talked, laughed and enjoyed their meal. At the end of lunch break, she stood up, gave him her number and kissed him on the cheek. "That was fun! I really like you Mike! Hope we can be friends!"

After weeks of hanging out with her, talking to her and texting her, Mike took the courage of asking her out. While waiting for her message back, he started to panic. Thinking why he did that. She's way out of his league. She'll freak and find new friends, and she probably find one of those douchy football quarterback guy as her boyfriend. Meanwhile the phone vibrated and in his amazement, she replied with these simple words. "Yes".

For their first date, Mike took her to the movies and a fancy dinner. They laughed and enjoyed the evening, When it is time to head back home, Mike walked her to her place first. Arriving at the porch, he leaned forward for a kiss. After a few seconds, another pair of lips met his. From this time on Rachel became Mike's other half.

After months of happiness with her, Mike noticed how strong their bond have grown and how their trust got stronger as well. She started to tell him her secrets, how sad she was when her dog died, how annoyed she was when her sister takes all her time in the bathroom and how she gets sad when she sees a homeless man begging for food. When she asked Mike about his past, he tried to change the subject by saying it is not worth telling. Rachel tried to convince him to talk about it as it is quite obvious for her that he was in pain before. After a few minutes of Rachel's nagging, he gave up and talked. While he's telling her about his childhood, how his father beat him whenever he came home drunk, which is mostly every night, the way his father destroyed the last piece of memory his mother left him and how he was thinking of committing suicide as he have no friends and no one to talk to. Rachel started to tear up. At the end, she thanked him for telling her his story and didn't do the unspeakable.

Years later, their relationship grew stronger, Mike starts to fall in love with her. On the night of their fourth anniversary, Mike was about to propose to Rachel. While he was waiting at the restaurant where they had their first date, champaign was ready, candles were lit just for them and a nice bouquet of red roses was sitting on the table with a beautiful diamond ring in his pocket. And for the first time, Rachel was late. Hours passed. The candles completely melted and the restaurant is about to close. Mike called her cell phone and left countless of messages. Until he was tired and went home, angry, heart broken and frustrated as Rachel stood him up on their anniversary.

The next day, he woke up with someone knocking on his door. As he dressed up to open it, he saw Rachel's sister on his porch. She look devastated and seemed to be crying all night. While he let her in, she told him why Rachel never showed up last night. Rachel were in a car accident when she was on her way to see him. Her taxi driver had a heart attack and lost control the car before smalling it on tree. Rachel died on her way to the hospital. Her last few words to the doctors were to Mike. "Tell him I'm sorry that I am late."

"She also had this in her bag when she passed." Said Rachel's sister as she took a gift out of her purse. In shock of the news, he took the gift and read the card first. "To Mike, the strongest man I've ever known in my life. I will love you always. Rachel." When he opened his gift, he saw a neckless. The same neckless as his mothers'. The same one as his father threw in the fire pit right in front if him. Once he opened it, a picture of Rachel and himself during their prom night, right next to it, a small hand written note quoted "Micheal, the love of my life". By seing such wonderful gift, Mike burst into tears.

Few months have flew by since Rachel's passing. As Mike got more popular and more friendly, some close friends of him kept asking him why he kept Rachel's old cellphone and why he still pays for her phone bill. His excuse were always "kept forgetting to let the phone company know" or "It's good to have a second cellphone sometimes!" But the truth is that Mike still pay for Rachel's phone bill is that he call her every night. The voice on her voice mail message remind him of a time where he was the happiest man he could be. He call her cell phone to listen to her sweet voice. How lovely it was and how comforting it sounds. He don't want to lose the last memory of the women who saved him, who pulled him out of his darkest moments, and she was the love of his life. And her name is Rachel.
