i step outside(breathe the mid-spring

air) and take in my surroundings

i sit on the stoop(shaded by a green canopy

Above); i listen to the trees in conversation

hissing gently in the breeze

they might be students set about a table

gossiping over endless coffees

as if in invitation

a cool draft brushes my cheek

lures me in, kind and sincere

i contribute little and suddenly

interrupted

a man walks to his truck

glances my direction, puzzled

then turns away to enter the contraption

a woman and her dog emerge beside me

timidly she says

“Hello”

i answer the same

the terrier approaches me(sniffing, curious)

i gingerly smooth her furry face

and after a brief, contrived exchange

the man intervenes

addresses the woman, name unknown

and awkward i slunk away to my flat
