Happy Days

I won’t stay long. Just a few seconds, a minute even. Just to see him.
Crouching beside a fence, a child’s laughter rings out. That’s him. A woman is with him – he calls her ‘Mummy’. There is love in his voice, adoration. It is agonising.
As I raise my head, I catch sight of him for the first time. He looks so familiar, although I only held him for a few minutes before he was taken away.
He spots me as I take a last look,
“Mummy, why is that girl sad?”
Good question. I’m sad because my son is happy.
