Lay me down in the river

That I might drown in peace

Lay me down in the river!

So I may drown in peace!

I don't need to live anymore

What was this life even for?

Lay me down in the river

So I may drown in peace

Tell my mother

That I am dead and gone

Will you please tell my mother!?!

That her son is dead and gone!

Tell her, even though I may be dead

I won't forget the words she said

Please tell my mother

That I am dead and gone

Bury me

In the cold Virginia snow

Will you bury me!

In the cold Virginia snow!

I'll tell you one thing I have learned

A dollar saved is a penny earned

Please bury me

In the cold Virginian snow

One of these days

I'll come back to you

I said, one of these days!

I'll come back to you!

As sure as my river flows downstream

You'll see me in your sweet dream

I'll come back to you

One of these days

Lay me down in the river

So I can see her again

Please! Lay me down in the river!

So I may see her again!

Lay me down so I can go to the place

Where she is there with her smiling face

Lay me down

So I may see her again
