Let’s Make Another WALLENBERG!
Can you guess what outstanding the person in the above picture did?
What destiny do you expect for a true human like Raoul?
Do you believe such brave humanitarian figures still exist or they disappeared for long?
Did you know that in each era, some special human beings stand out and risk their lives to save lives? As we all know the delight of life, why do these humans extend their helping hands toward those in danger? And what is it that they possess and we lack? Well, such people are really liberated and pure ones who prefer other interests over those of themselves. One of these figures is no body but Raoul Wallenberg who shocked the world by the way he managed to rescue tens of thousands of Jews from Nazi Holocaust. The wise might learn the lessons of resistance, intolerance, and humanity from Wallenberg’s courageous acts.
On August 4, 1912, a baby boy namely Raoul Wallenberg opened his eyes in Lidingo, Sweden. After military service and graduation in the field of Architecture from the University of Michigan, he was tasked to travel to Budapest, Hungary where cruelty and repression were at a high. In there, He could not close his eyes on persecution and hatred. He decided to stand against xenophobia and anti-semitism at the cost of his own life. Raoul with great courage, pulled tens of thousands of deported Hungarian Jews from the train headed to horrible camps, fed them and sheltered them as well. He designed provisional passes -which really worked- for the Jewish victims and kept them in buildings in the Swedish territory in Budapest where the Swedish flags were waving a top. ‘I won’t return to Sweden unless I make sure I have done what I have to’ said brave Raoul conscientiously. And tragically he did not find a chance to revisit his home country. The occupying Soviet Union troops arrested him in 1945 and took him to their notorious prison, Ljubljanka and afterwards he faded into a long mystery. No one for sure knows what happed to Raoul. He might have died in the prison, or lived his life in a mental hospital in Russia after the arrest (as some believe to be so.). May peace of the Lord fall upon him and all others like him.
Raoul Wallenberg and those heroes like him, inspired us to fight against cruelty, stand against inhumanity, voice out in suffocated atmospheres, oblige to help our fellow world citizens, shield the asylum seekers fleeing their war-striken, oppression-covered hometowns, and protect them as Raoul Wallenberg symbolically displayed.
The message obtained from the humanitarian mission of the great Raoul should shake up many, be it from developed and democratic governments, nations, organizations and individuals. The western states where human rights is in place are really expected not to look away from the scenes of human persecution, crackdown, torture, murder, and suffocation in countries such as Iran, Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, etc. To act humanitarianly as well as protectively, periodical commemorations seem required; commemorations of great free humans; commemorations of WALLENBERGS!
