“Good morning high school students today is November first and I am Sam. We have a very important announcement today for all students that want to run long distance for track this year. If you want to run, come down to the office to fill out the papers,” I said dauntlessly hoping there will be a lot of people that sign up.

“Hey, you did well today on the speaker! I think we will have a lot more runners then last year,” Sid said obsequious.

“I don’t think it can get any worse than last year,” I said. Later that day we went to the office to see how many people signed up for the team and there was three. Ana was the first with her name down on the paper. She was a year older than me and she was much taller then everyone in the school. Then there was Max, he was in the same grade as me and he is one of my friends. Finally, the last name was Tom, and Tom was only a freshmen. He was a bigger kid and absolutely hated to run.

“Why did Tom sign up for the long distance team?  I thought he would be a thrower.” Sid exclaimed.

“I don’t know! That is what I thought too,” I agreed. Soon after we checked the paper the bell rang and I had to walk home from school. This was my favorite part of the day because the school is located right next to New York City and the one road I walk on has the perfect view of the whole city. Once I got home my mom was sitting on the couch.

“How was your day?” she asked.

“It was good mom. We have three new people on the long distant team this year. With me and Sid that’s a grand total of five” I replied.

“That is double from what you had last year!” she said excitedly as she jumped off the couch to give me a hug.

“Hopefully this year we can win some meets,” I said. Then I went upstairs to do my homework and then went to bed.

The next morning I got up early to get a shower and to get something to eat. As I was packing my bag I looked at the clock and realized I was late! So I ephemerally ran down the street to school. I ended up getting to school within two minutes and went to find Sid. Sid was in the hallway standing with all of the new long distance runners.

“Hey, what’s up everyone?” I yelled from ten feet away.

“Nothing much, I just ran into all of the new members on the long distance team,” Sid said.

“Hello!” Ana said fervently.

“We can all meet for practice in the front of the building after school,” I told the squad.

“Sounds like a plan to me,” Sid said. Everyone else agreed with him and the bell rang to go to first period. Later that day we went to lunch. As Ana was on her way back to her seat, another student named Randy came up and slapped her tray right out of her hands while he laughed and then he walked away as well as everyone that saw it happen. Ana was left standing there with food splattered all over the floor with tears on her face she looked so chagrin.

It was finally the end of the day and we all went to the front of the school to meet with our running shoes on. Everyone, even Ana, looked excited to be there.

“Ok guys, we are just going to run about two to three miles today to see how everyone feels and then we will take it from there!” I said excitedly. Everyone looked a little nervous.

“Ok let’s do this,” Max said.

We all began to run at a fast pace. Everyone was able to hold the pace and that is when I realized that we could win it all.

“Hey now do you think we can slow it down a little and maybe play some music?” Tom gasped as he almost stepped on a carrion animal and he just began to laugh.

“Ok sounds good to me,” Sid said. We got back to the school and everyone look out of breath.

“Alright it looks like we put in a lot of work today so I think that we will have practice every day for the rest of the week,” I said. Everyone left and I walked home. When I got home I went and ate dinner and then I went to bed to get ready for school the next day.

The week had passed by quickly with everyone on the long distance team in better shape than they were the week before. Tomorrow is the big day…our first meet. It is a tri-meet which means that there are three schools that participate in the meet. At the end of the day everyone comes to find me to get their uniforms for the meet.

“The bus leaves at l: 30. There will be water at the meet for us. Anyone have any questions?” I asked erudite.

“Yes, should I wear something under this uniform?” Max asked as he held up the underwear looking shorts.

“Yes! You should wear white compression shorts and a white compression shirt under the uniform. Anything else?” I asked happily as we got ready to leave for the day.

The next day arrived and at 1: 30 everyone boarded the bus and we left the school. We traveled 30 minutes down the road to get to the school where the meet was at. Everyone looked excited to run and wanted to do well. The 1600 meter was the third event in the meet with only 10 kids running counting us. As we were getting ready to take our places, Tom began to look a little nervous. Ana went over to him and calmly told him it would be ok.

“Everyone please come up to the line and when I shoot my gun you will all begin to run and if someone falls I will shoot again and everyone will have to come back and we will reset. Best of luck to all of you runners,” The official said.

We all lined up on the starting line and got ready for the signal to run. The gun fired and everyone tried to get to the front. Sid and I were in front of our team with them following right behind us. There were three other people ahead of us and there was no way we could catch them. We went into the straight away and we were still in the same order and that was how we crossed the finish line. We were all out of breath and huffing and puffing when we heard the final results of the entire meet on the loud speakers saying that we took second place over all. We were all so happy and surprised that we did so well at our first meet!

“Hey we did outstanding for our first meet! We will just need to work on some things and we will be winning in first place,” I said vehemently.

“That was a lot of fun and I think we can do better too,” Ana said.

“We will have practice after school the same as last week,” I said. When we got back to our school we all went home to get ready for school the next day. When I got home I told my mom the good news and she seemed so thrilled! I went to eat dinner and then went to bed to be ready for school the next day. I woke up the next morning and went to school and that boor Randy was messing with Ana again but this time instead of messing with her lunch tray, he was calling her names and yelling in her face. Ana looked like she was about to cry.

“You should just quit running long distance because only losers run long distance,” Randy yelled.

“Ok, ok I will quit if you will stop making fun of me,” Ana cried out.

I went and ran to the office to tell them that Ana was getting bullied and then the principle went running to where the two were standing. Ana looked surprised to see someone stop Randy and Randy look like he was about to cry. I heard the principle say something to Randy and he went to the office and Ana breathed a sigh of relief.

“Hey Sam, was that you that went and got the principle for me?” Ana said

“Yes. Are you still going to quit long distance?” I replied

“No, I love running long distance and we are going to win our next meet,” Ana replied quickly.

“Ok that sounds like a plan,”I said smiling. We went on with our day at school. Then when I went home I told my mom what happened.

“I am glad you did not act bestial and not go and get any help,” She said.

“I would never act like that, that is just not right,” I said. I went up to my room and went to bed. I got up the next morning and got ready for school. I got to school in no time at all. Finally came the end of the week. The second meet was today and we were all excited and ready to run. It was another tri-meet and we were going to be running in five minutes. We all lined up at the starting line and got the talk from the official like usual. Then he fired the gun and we all took off. Our whole team got out in front and it stayed that way for the whole run. We got to the final straight away and we finished as a team in the front. Then came the announcement on the loud speaker… It said that we came in first for the whole meet!

“I knew we could come in first place and I am so happy! We will need to do this for every meet from now on and Ana, we couldn’t have done it without you!” I said. Everyone agreed with me and we all went out to eat to celebrate our first place!
