I knew the US was a corrupted place to be, but what the hell? In case you haven't read the news, a pregnant woman from Alabama was shot at last December by her coworker. She lost the baby, and instead of the shooter getting accused, the pregnant woman is blamed. She is blamed, because apparently she started the fight that led to the shooting, and the shooter did it as self-defense.

Alabama passed the law that doesn't allow abortions even in extreme cases such as insest or rape. Once people maybe have gotten over that since it's been a few weeks, this is ridiculous. How is it the mother's fault if she's shot and the baby dies? I know the juridicial system in the US is corrupted as hell, because what kind of a constitutional state uses juries nowadays? This just shows that apparently, once you're pregnant, your only job is to make sure the unborn baby lives long enough to be born. After that, no one really cares about children. If the state did, they wouldn't have kids in detention centers.

There are two things that piss me off about this. First off is the expectation that the mother is actually in charge of the fetus. She is, but accidents happen. You go to work one day, have an argument with your coworker, and get accused of murder. That's ridiculous, because who hasn't argued with their coworkers? It's called normal life. A woman can't stay inside four walls for nine months. This raises the question what is her fault. If the woman decides to take the stairs if she could take the lift, falls, and the baby dies, is she going to be accused of murder of an unborn child? What about if there is a family argument that one of the parents starts. In the end, a child is killed by an angry parent. Do you blame the parent who killed them, or the one who started the fight? You can't expect a woman not to life for almost a year because she could get into an accident and the baby might die.

The second thing is the idea of self-defense. I have no idea how the law in Alabama works, but self-defense is a relative term. If you fight, but can still walk to your car freely, take a gun and shoot, you obviously could also get in the car and leave the situation. You are not in danger. If the pregnant woman was strangling you or beating you, that's a different thing, in which case you have the right to use violence to defend yourself. An argument, is not.

It was also stated that the only victim was the child in this case. That's harshly said, because seriously. The mother is a victim. Her child was killled. I'm pretty sure that's going to leave her griefing, as she has just lost a child. Not to mention, if you shoot someone, it's assault. Or attempted murder. Or both. It hurts. It's not like you get shot, the next day it's like nothing happened. It can be traumatic, especially in case you lose the child you were carrying.

I honestly don't know what to say. Probably the next thing in Alabama, they ban birth control. Or just isolate pregnant women to prevent them from killing their children. I don't know but I'm glad I don't have to live there. It's sad to think that the US, which is often seen as a free and equal, modern contry. To someone looking at it from outside, it looks less like that perfect country, and more like Gilead.
