This year, in all the Christmas Rush, remember that it can be one of the hardest times of year for some. Even if you may not see it yourself, many suffer alone... Even if it's just until someone arrives.

The Weight
By Henry Duthler

The man lit an old candle
On that dark December night
And placed it in the window
And waited...

Quietly under his breath,
Soft words were spoken,
As he sat there alone
And waited.

His hands held together,
His feet firm against the floor.
As a tear slowly began to form;
And waited...

His eyes welling up…
And his lip about to tremble.
He looked to the phone --
And waited.

Outside the window where he sat,
The world, it carried on, he thought.
If only it had known
And waited...

That candles dim in darkest hours,
Against this cold December Eve.
In the dark he sat alone,
And waited.

The tear upon his cheek about to fall,
He prayed for them one last time.
That he hadn't been wrong--
And waited...

A knock against the old wooden door!
The creak as the handle turns;
Just out of sight, he wiped away the tears,
And waited.

Their voices alive with laughter
That carried them into the room…
Happy to finally see him; sorry that he had worried so…
And waited.

unmasked delusions

Instead of describing a bunch of unfortunate people during the holidays, I like how you only focused on one and made it so the reader could feel what the main character was feeling. You didn't have to describe in detail what he felt because his actions and the way you wrote it was words enough and I like how some writers, including you, can do that. You really made it come to life and it was Very unique.

Thanks so much! This is a very personal piece because I really feel like the holidays are so hard for some... While others seem to not even notice that not everything is jingle bells! On a more personal note... Thanks for coming back to read my stuff. You've always been someone who makes posting my stuff feel worthwhile! Cheers!
