I like the resonances of dwindles, darkling, kindling, and cinders. The second verse flows much more freely, like the poetic imagination itself.

When in winter’s depths daylight dwindles

When in winter’s depths daylight dwindles

And no kindling is left for the fire

The darkling night conquers the cinders

And it is then that we aspire

To fields and flowers and streams and hours

Of carefree loving passion

In woods and bowers and lofts and towers

And robes of high summer fashion.
