Raining. Always raining, but why on their first day of school? Salem didn't mind the rain, but she didn't like it either. She didn't freak out when her hair got wet, like the other girly-girls waiting at their bus stop. Addison, her younger sister, was walking silently behind her. Her slilence was unexpected, considering that she was quite the talker. Perhaps she was nervous about her first day of sixth grade.
Once they reached the stop, they saw a crowd of familer faces. Some Salem knew from last year, and some joining the new year. And there he was.
"Ethan!" Salem exclaimed. She saw her best friend every day, as he was her neighbor, yet it was different seeing him at 8:20 A.M. instead of at three in the afternoon.
They all caught up with eachother, given the time to, whilst everyone had noticed that the bus was late, as they expected. They've never had one good bus driver, not since elementray school.
Salem was excited for the new year, yet nervous at the same time. She hasn't seen a lot of people since seventh grade. And there were certain people she dreaded seeing, considering their relationship over the summer.
With a loud screetch, the bus had arrived. Everyone filed in, unorderly as always. Salem found her seat next to Lauren, her best friend since sixth. They, as everyone does on the first day back, catch up over the events of the summer. She asked about him.
"How are you and Rylan? I heard about what happened. Are you okay?" She asked, worried. Salem liked Rylan since half-way through seventh grade. After a field trip, she mustered up the courage to ask him out, yet as expected, he turned her down. But surprisingly, a week later, he asked her out. She said yes, of course, and they were a happy middle school couple. You saw them everywhere in junior high. But a month into their realtionship, a month into the summer, he broke up with her.
"I'm fine, why wouldn't I be? I'm not the type to let a simple break-up get me down!" Salem replied, enthusiastic. Yet she didn't want to see him at school, knowing how awkward it would be if they had a class together.
They went through their day normally. Salem was reunited with old friends, Hanna and Dayton, the couple since forever. The on-and-off couple was more like it. Hanna's mom was a problem some of the time, whilst the other problem was Dayton's personality. A little cocky are we? Do we sense a big ego in the room? Oh why yes we do. Yet Salem found that she had first and seventh period with Rylan. Fourth and sixth with Dayton, and second and third with Lauren. This was going to be a long day.
Salem walked into Social Studies, picking a seat in the middle of the class. She usually liked this subject, it was the people in class she didn't like. Rylan was avoiding her. She didn't exactly know why, yet she didn't care. He pissed her off with his attitude.
Even though she denies it, she still liked Rylan. And it hurt her for him to treat her as such. Yet she was strong-willed, so she wasn't going to let people know it hurt.
3 weeks before Salem's birthday
It was nearing the end of September, Salem and her friends were comfortable in their new school life. They've meet their teachers, remembered the location of all their classes and have situated their places at lunch. After stay with Lauren and Shannon for a month, Hanna invited Salem to sit with her. Salem agreed, considering she liked hanging out with Hanna.
As it turns out, Hanna sits with Dayton, her boyfriend, and his friends, Embry, Kayden, Rylan, and sometimes Lucas. Salem was okay friends with all of them except Rylan, considering he was ignoring her.
One week before, whilst Salem was sitting with Hanna and Adeline, who had decided to sit at the table behind the boys, Rylan walked by them, but as he walked by Salem, he took two seconds to poke her shoulder. Then he continued on his path, as if nothing happened.
Salem was thrilled. 'Does he want to talk to me now? Does he want to be friends now?' She wondered constantly, yet it gave her confidence to contnue talking to him.
To mend her friendships, she decided to sit with the boys. In the process, she developed a very good friendship with Dayton, Hanna's boyfriend.
He had messaged her one day. Saying he had a problem and he needed help. Salem, being the good friend she is, offered to help. Yet Dayton confessed that he liked another girl, even though he was already with Hanna. Confused, Salem asked who she was; why he liked her.
Dayton gave hints, leading Salem into knowing that it was her that he liked. Salem had had a slight attraction to him, yet didn't dream of taking him from Hanna.
Yet, Dayton didn't give up on trying to get close to Salem. He still had feelings for Hanna, yet felt like he liked Salem more.
They talked constantly, considering Dayton called her every other day. They usually spent hours talking. Dayton wanted to break up with Hanna for Salem. And Salem would feel bad yet she knew that Dayton would be happier without Hanna. And Hanna would find someone better anyway.
Day of Salem's birth
Salem had invited her close friends. Ethan, Dayton, Hanna, Adeline, Noelle, Cecily, and Keegan. Keegan went to a different school but they still kept in touch.
They were all just haning out, and when it was time for presents, they all gathered around Salem. Even her brother, Nathan, was there to celebrate. She had gotten a cell phone. And with this, she was very very excited. She went around to everyone there, gathering phone numbers.
She had made sure to get Dayton's phone number and secretly texted him during the day. And he did the same, until Ana, Addison's friend, found out who he was texting and texted for him, to his acceptance. Because, as always, Ana knew everything about everyone.
Salem became jealous of Hanna and complained that Hanna got to be all over Dayton, yet Dayton said that he was sorry and he would fix it.
A week later
Dayton broke up with Hanna. And the weekend after, over the phone, he asked Salem out. She said yes. Yet they didn't tell anyone, although some could tell. They held hands, talked, had fun. Yet, according to Dayton, Hanna was depressed. Like some, she could tell they were together. And that made her even more miserable. Appearently, she told Dayton that she was so depressed, that she was going to kill herself.Dayton felt bad. Horrible. He felt so bad that he broke up with Salem and went back with Hanna.
Yet, as time went by, he realized that he had hurt two girls. Salem really liked Dayton. And he dated her for a week before breaking her heart. This made her unable to like him ever again. or anyone like him:
Word of Advice: Never fall for a taken man. Or, more accuratly, don't let a taken man fall in love with you. Because, he will find the right things to say, which will end up with you liking him, which is a no-no. He will end up breaking up with his current girlfriend to date you. Maybe it'll work out, maybe not. But, know this, from your experiance, you know that once he has eyes on another girl, he won't hesitate to end it with you for her. In conclusion, if he dumped his current girlfriend for you, who says he wont do it again for someone else?
She was just as upset as Hanna. Considering her point of view was way worse than Hanna's. Hanna already had Dayton. Yet when he found someone else, she guilted him into dating her again. Maybe she liked him, maybe she was just using him, or maybe, Hanna is the type that NEEDS somebody there. Who knows? All we know is that Hanna can't live without a boyfriend.
Word of Advice: You do not need someone else to evaluate your self worth. You don't need a boyfriend or girlfriend to be somebody. You don't need somebody to define who you are as a person. You are you. You don't need anybody except for the people who respect you for who you are. Yet, there are some out there who think that they need a partner to show how attractive they are, or how much they are needed. And what sucks, is when the other in the relationship is actually in love whilst the other thinks of it as a game. In conclusion, love sucks. Enjoy yourself before you take on the responibility of another person. It is guarenteed that they will need you, and you will need them, for things you cannot do on your own. There are some things you will not find out about yourself unless someone else points it out to you. You have the oppertunity to rely on someone and them on you. Just make sure you make the right choices.
Salem moved on though. She, unexpectedly, started liking Kayden Ross, the nerd of the group. And by nerd, I mean nerd. He has glasses, took all AP classes and signed up for all IB classes in High School. Overachiever much?
He indirectly confessed, and she asked him out. He agreed and they dated for a couple months. She really loved him. She held hands with him, hugged him, was herself with him. Yet.. he was shy. He never texted her first. Never held hands with her unless she reached for his hand. Yes, he went for the hugs, but it didn't add up.
What really didn't add up was that, after three months, he wasn't at lunch. And he didn't text her back. She would ask him why he wasn't at lunch.
"I have math homework..." Is what he would relpy eachtime. Yet, when springbreak came, she stayed the night at Keegan's. She texted him 'Why won't you talk to me?' Rylan, in a comfort attempt, said "Even if he won't talk to you, I will." And he talked to her on Xbox, considering now she had one. The other boys that talked to her were Lucas, Cole, and Matthew.
She would text Lucas as a comfort attempt. Cole was who she could tell her problems, same for Rylan. But Matthew, the one she met through Kayden, was who gave her wise advice. He always had something smart to say about what she came to him about. She had friends, yet her boyfriend continued to ignore her for unknown reasons. It made her entierly too upset. Yet, once she got home and on XBox, she noticed Kayden was online.
She messaged him, "Can I talk to you?" She waited for his response. And what she got was an invite to a XBox party. Thrilled, she didn't waste time to join it. Although she found that they weren't alone. Dayton was also in the party.
After some time, Dayton sighed. "Salem.. Do you know why Kayden hasn't been talking to you?"
"No. that's why I've been asking you and Rylan." She replied, slightly annoyed.
"Well," he sighed again, "He was tired of seeing all his friends at lunch flirting with you. So he went to do math with Lucas. And he finished all his work on the first day. He just didn't want to hear all that flirting crap.
And he didn't know what to do. But you started hanging out with Rylan more and more..."
Salem just sat in silence, listening. until it got to the point that Kayden asked THE question.
"Can we just be friends?"
That question everybody dreaded, boy or girl. It hurt Salem, considering that she loved Kayden, a lot.
She didn't understand what she did wrong. Until Dayton, many months later, explained everything to her.
Kayden was not skilled with women. He never knew what to say to girls. Everytime Salem would text something to him, he would text Dayton about it, asking what to say... Dayton would suggest something and Kayden would say it, Making Salem feel great about herself. And when he ignored her, it was acctually because Dayton refused to tell him things anymore. Given that, he didn't know what to do. HE appearently thought Salem was ignoring him.
How does that even work out?! She was CLEARLY not ignoring him. She texted him everyday, and talked to him after school every day. His arguement was invaild, when I know think about it. All these lies makes me wonder, is everything a guy says the truth?
Salem had developed a 'best friend type relationship' so to speak with Rylan. She told him almost everytime. But, after Kayden broke up with her, Rylan wouldn't talk to her anymore. She didn't think much of it until when she went to school, he wouldn't even look at her. It hurt her worse than anything. She told him everything and vice versa. She depended on him. Yet he had turned his back on her. And for what reason?
Salem asked him, "Why won't you talk to me? I thought you hated to make me cry."
"Kayden. He said if I talk to you he won't be my friend anymore and I've known him longer so.."
"That.. doesn't even make sense. Why would he do that?"
"Don't ask me. Ask him. I gotta go. Bye."
Nothing made sense. It felt that everyone was against her. After their breakup, Rylan ignored her, and she felt miserable. Lucas tried though. Talked to her. Made her fall for him. And they dated, maybe three weeks after her breakup with Kayden. Yet, because of this, everyone was against her. Dayton said terribly rude things online about their relationship. Rylan continued to ignore her. Everyone at their lunch table absolutely refused to acknowledge her existence, pushing her into moving lunch tables even. She moved to sit with Lauren and Shannon again. Yet, also, she lost touch with Matthew and Cole.
After a week, Lucas ended it between them. And, not too long after that, her friend, Jake, told her of all the terrible things he said about her. Saying that she ruined his friendships. Jake countered saying "Well my friends like her."
It was horrible. Everyone, except a few, had turned agianst her.
She tried again with Rylan, saying that Kayden won't hate him for talking to her.
"Oh yes he would. I know him and hes going NOT going to let this go."
Salem was speechless. After this, he turned, and started a happy go lucky conversation with Alex. She didn't know what to do, considering she started crying. "I'll just see you later..." She stormed out of the room, into the neighboring math class, and took her seat. She shared this class with Dayton, and surprisingly, he sat next to her.
After a awhile, he asked her what was wrong, why she was crying. She told him everything. He side of the story, considering all he knew was what Kayden had said.
Yet, he wanted her to tell everyone at the table. Get the story right.
She attempted it, yet they went on ignoring her. She got used to it, only to continue sitting with her new friends and avoiding sitting with them. Although, now Salem is still friends with Rylan, Dayton and Hanna, they just don't talk at much.
She spent more time with Ethan. She went to his house, played games with him, gave him advice, stuff friends do. Although, he had one paticular problem.
"She wants me to kiss her.." Ethan was dating Katie. That one type of girl you always expect to grow up into a slut. He liked that type appearently. They had been dating for maybe a month and a half. And Katie wanted Ethan to kiss her. Although, each time her tried, he wussed out. Poor Ethan.
And, after Kayden, Salem had fallen for underclassman, Ian. He was bestfriends with Ethan, and in his grade. Seventh grade. A grade below Salem and her peers. Sucks, huh? Anyway, Ian had returned Salem's feelings, yet wanted to wait til they were both in High School. Just so it'd be easier for them to date. Silly idea, eh? Even so, Ian wanted to kiss Salem! Surprise! Although Salem had no idea what to do and such.
Ethan, with his smartness and retardness, thought of a 'brilliant' plan, considering their predicaments. Salem was in Ethan's room, as usual. They were playing UFC fighters. When Ethan brought IT up.
"Hey, Salem? I was thinking about it.. Since we're both curious as to what it feels like to kiss.. why don't we do an 'experiment'? We kiss, just to know what it feels like. Then don't tell anyone. Everything will go back to normal! Smart, huh?"
"I.. uh... Don't know." Salem, speechless. Wouldn't it mess up their friendship? What I liked him? What if he liked me? Ah, crap.
After time, Salem was fed up with Ian's attempts. He wussed out on everything and Salem was done. She agreed to kissing Ethan, only cause she was angry at Ian. After, time went on. And.... as suspected.. Ethan said it.
"I like you."
"DIDN'T I TELL YOU THIS WOULD HAPPEN?! But noooo, you don't listen..."
Gah... Boys. Stupid, inferrier idiots. But, what can you do about them? Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
Time went on. After a month, Rylan resumed communication with Salem. Although, their friendship was severly injured and they are not as close as they used to be, they still talk now and then. She still talks to Dayton. He considers her his bestfriend, and even said that sometimes he wishes he chose her instead of Hanna. But Salem knew
better. Salem spend a lot more time with Keegan, Noelle and Cecily. Ethan likes Salem, yet Salem doesn't want that. Honestly, she now avoids him. She's decided that she doesn't even like Ian anymore! Surprise! All in all, Salem gave up on relationships. She decided that she would wait until everyone was mature. She wasn't looking for a game, she was looking for commitment. She hated being hurt.
She decided, 'I'm better than this. I don't deserve this. I will not let myself suffer through this kind of stuff. I was stupid, probably still am, but I'm done with boys. Screw boys! I'm standing beside Noelle on this one. Boys suck. Immature ones atleast.' :P
Interestingly enough, she regained contact with Matthew. Salem just wanted friendship, and she had high hopes, considering the situtaion between her and Matthew: They met through Kayden, so they've only ever talked though XBox or Facebook.
And, without even realizing it, she started liking him. And, this tells people something.
Salem liked Matthew for his personality. She never met him in person. She wasn't so low as to only be into someone just for their looks. And Matthew is living proof. She did find him attractive, given the pictures she's seen, but she was slightly more into his personality, the way he talked, reacted, gave her advice, everything. It was nice.
You could tell he wasn't just some horny teenage boy. Matthew wasn't like almost ever boy you text. Matthew knew what grammer and punctuation was. He would send sentences, not just "k." He would keep the conversation going. He actually tried. He acted like the gentleman he is. And you don't always find that in guys. Which was nice to know that not every boy was the same.
Faith in humanity had been restored. ;)
