Deviance is an act committed that breaks a social rule, or refusing to follow one. Deviant acts may or may not be illegal in fact most deviant acts are not illegal. For an act to become deviant it has to be labeled as such by a group powerful enough to make that label stick. In fact most of us will commit an act that is consider to be deviant today like speeding or using a cell phone hanging out with someone from another race. Most of us have seen a tattoo or many of us may have one as well. Tattoos are one of the deviant acts of subculture that has been redefined as socially acceptable. With the changing times today is has become more socially acceptable for single parent families when just a few years ago that was looked down upon by most of society. Motorcycle gangs a subculture all of their own and one that for much of its history has always been stereotyped as unlawful as a whole. Today that idea has changed their more motorcycle gangs and clubs then ever before and most are very helpful to society.

Deviance

Today deviant behavior has been redefined by society and the acts of deviances have changed from what they use to be.  Today due to integration spurred on by mass media mainly due to television our ideas of deviance has been redefined and our acceptance of certain subcultures has been greatly widen.  But the question today is does society influence television and what is shown or does television influence mainstream society today.  Both sides can make great arguments and push their points to influence the audience to sway towards one side or the other.  “Society and family’s are under siege”.  Says parent’s television council. While others such as Paul Levinson a media observer says that “Television merely mirrors life”.  There is nothing more deviant on today’s television then that of teen pregnancies with the hit MTV’s reality show Teen Mom.  Teen pregnancies has been slowly on the rise over the last 20 years with more and more single parents and children being raised by their grandparents today.  Teen pregnancies were almost never talked about in as little as 50 years ago and today it’s as mainstream and as socially acceptable as a gay or lesbian marriage.  Unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases are more common among youth today than ever before and it is widely believed that television plays a role in influencing teen sexual activity.  The average teenager watches three hours of television a day with heavy doses of sexual content, ranging from touching, kissing, jokes and sexual innuendo to sexual activity and portrayals of intercourse.  Sex is often presented as a casual activity without risk or consequences.  The subject of sex has always been a part of television and society for the most part.  But the question is has it been evolutionary or revolutionary.

Today television latest sexually charged offerings add to the current wave of visually explicit reality and scripted programs filled with frank themes and content.  But it’s not just movies and televisions going this route but video games are also going in a more sexually charged direction as well, with games like Fable for the Xbox 360.

And it’s not just the teenage group that television shows are going after but also the parents as well with hit shows like HBO’s “Big Love” which depicts polygamist, and their short run series “swingers” which show cased the lives of couples that are middle aged and engaged in wife swapping suggesting that sex within a relationship becomes boring or that monogamy is not accepted into days society.

And today one of the most deviant acts portrayed on television is gay or lesbian relationships.  But today’s television approach to gay sex is partly about society’s changing attitudes about homosexuality, which have been rapidly shifting for decades.  Americans have began to consider gay “relations” to be more morally acceptable and believing that gay relations should be legal has climbed to over 60% today.

So where will it end?  It’s impossible to know where society’s toleration for sexual deviance on television will end.  Sexual deviance is taking over the world or at least television.  Premium cable is clearly moving the bar for all of television but they aren’t pushing the limits for the sake of pushing limits, or to degrade morals, or to draw attention to their programs.  But there is one thing for certain sex is part of life and if people are offended there’s a simple remedy  “Don’t watch”.
