Bigger the Better?

Hey I’m Jimothy just that average grade eight kid that no one takes a second look at. Yup that’s me the lonely one who used to hide out in the corner at my old school.?You’d never know by looking at me that I was the brother of the ever famous Antonio who won the soccer series for Rome three years in a row. Antonio is tall, muscular and above all else athletic. Some times I think I’m adopted when I look at myself. I’m scrawny and short with long brown hair which I hide from everyone behind. Even though I’m small I still had a dream, a big dream, to be on the soccer team! I had dreamt about it all summer now being the first day of summer I might just be able to make it come true.

Today being September 14th was my first day at my new school.Last year my dad had got an amazing job offer for manager of all soccer ball?making companies in England. The only problem being we lived in Italy. My dad decided we were moving to England and no matter how much me and Antonio protested, we still couldn’t change his mind. Antonio being 18 had to quit his job and has started working at a gas station while going to the University of London.

All summer I’ve been taking walks and bike rides around the city getting to know the neighbourhood. Now it was my first day of school and I was on my way on a transit bus. It was a twenty minute ride and I just listened to my iPod the whole way. It dropped me off at the front close to the school with a couple other kids. All the kids saw each other and asked how each other’s summer were as we walked up the front steps. The principal of St. Roberts was at the front doors greeting everyone. When I got to him he said “Oh you must be Jimothy the new student” I nodded so he continued “ would you like it if I got one of my grade 10 students to give you a guide around the school today?” I nodded again so he said “ so how about in the gym in 10 minutes?” “Sounds great” I responded. So I went and walked to my locker which was right in front of my homeroom class. It took me ten minutes to actually find the gym. When I got there, there was a tall red haired girl waiting for me. I walked up to her and asked her if she was going to be my guide she said yes so I started my tour of the school. “My name is Amy, so do you want to start with class rooms?”. “Sure”. Amy showed me how to get to all my classes then we went to the office and the medical center. Next we went to the rec. room. We stopped back in front of my home room so I asked her what was on the second floor. “Oh there’s nothing up there that you need to worry about that’s all just grades 10-12. “do you have any questions?” she asked me. “Nope none that I can think of.” “Alright then, I’ll see you later.” She turned around to leave but then I asked her “how’s the soccer team?” She turned around slowly and said “not to be mean but you’d never make it.” And with that she turned around and walked off. I felt tears in my eyes. I loved soccer. I wasn’t better than the other kids at my school last year but I wasn’t that bad. Who was I kidding I was small, weak and didn’t know any special moves. I wiped my eyes and walked into my homeroom.

Inside, kids were putting away dictionaries and talking to one another. The teacher looked up from his newspaper and said “Hello you must be Jimothy, I’m Mr. Jones your Science and English teacher. Why don’t you take the rest of the day to check out the outside of the school.” I started to leave when I saw that there was next to nobody in the class so I decided to ask “where is everybody?” “Oh they’re at soccer tryouts I think.” I thanked him then left. I went to go and watch even if I wasn’t going to participate. As I crossed the field to where the soccer tryouts were taking place, the coach was watching the players take shots on the goalie. The goalie was amazing he blocked every shot the soccer players threw at him. Until the last guy that is. I knew from his confident stride that this must be team captain. This guy was big and by big I mean HUGE. He walked up to the ball and the goalie started looking scared. The big guy kicked the ball so hard and fast that if you blinked you would have missed it. The ball hit the goalie’s outstretched hand his hand bent back at an awkward angle and the ball went in the net. The big guy’s fists shot up into the air and he let out a big YEA. But all eyes were on the goalie he was yelping with pain on the ground. “Hey you!” I didn’t realize it at first but the coach was yelling at me. So I ran over to him and he shouted what’s your name “J.. J.. Jimothy” I told him. “Please take Andy to the medical center” Andy walked over to me and gave a weak “lets go.”

Andy was quiet (other than the few moans a minute) until he asked me “So thinking about going to the tryouts?”“Nah they’d probably be over by the time I got back outside anyway.” He looked at me funny then asked “are you new here?” “yeah so…” “Coach doesn’t care about the tryouts at all it’s all about the tryout scrimmage. Are you going to the scrimmage?” We were at the medical center now,so I told him I’d think about it. “It’s tomorrow at 5:00pm” I said?good bye then started to walk back and then I said “yeah, yeah I’ll be there!” “great see you tomorrow” Andy said as he walked into the medical center.

I walked back to my locker and got my books and schoolbag. I walked to the bus stop and the transit picked me up five minutes later. During the ride I didn’t listen to my iPod because I was so busy thinking about the possibility of actually making the soccer team. I decided to talk to Antonio about it when he got back from work. When I got home I unlocked the door and made a snack. Then had a nice nap until six pm. I decided I’d start practicing without Antonio so I started juggling the ball for? fifteen minutes then I heard the door slam and ran inside. Antonio was walking up the stairs to change out of his Esso uniform. “Guess what?” I asked him. “Let me guess you don’t like your new school?” “No.. No it’s not that I’m going to tryout for the school’s soccer team.” “Oh that's great.. Hey I’ll give you a few pointers(under his breath, "he'll need them")wait for me outside.”I waited for about five minutes when he came down. “The first thing you have to know is to always go for the ball no matter what and to always..” He was interrupted by a loud ringing he flipped open his cell phone and said “Hello? Hmm.. in fifteen minutes? O.k. see you then”! “Sorry bud got to go to the bar and meet some friends. Always try your hardest!” With that he left.

I practiced for another hour then went inside to watch some tele. At nine-thirty Dad phoned to say that he was going to be late so as not to wait for him. At ten I went upstairs to listen to the radio for a bit then I fell asleep at eleven. I had a dream where I was team captain and I was winning the series. In the morning I got up and made myself a bowl of cheerios and started to read the funnies. My brother got up when I was halfway through my cheerios and looked at me with a shocked expression and said “why aren’t you getting ready for school? It’s in half an hour go get dressed I’ll make your lunch. I went and got dressed and then came down to pack my bag. One minute later we were in the Mercedes Benz flying across town to get to my school. We got there just as the bell rang.

I saw Andy and walked over to him “scrimmage tonight will you be there?” I asked him. “Totally, even if my arm isn’t any better.” I decided to ask him if he wanted to sit next to me in class he said yeah so I spent the first half of the day talking to Andy and doing easy math problems. I learned that Andy had a brother and a sister. After lunch we had Science and then E.L.A. and all me and Andy talked about was the soccer game. He told me that there are always fifteen open spots on the soccer team and there are about thirty people that go. That got me a little.. well a lot concerned. I’d have to go up against nine other people.“Is there anyone who is going to make the team for sure” I asked Andy. He didn’t even have to think about it before saying Jeremy for sure. “who’s Jeremy?” I asked. “He’s the big guy who hurt my wrist”. Andy started saying something “like There’s something strange about Jeremy..” when the office called and said they’d like to see Andy in the office immediately. Andy told me the combo to his lock and to put his stuff away if he didn’t come back. For the rest of the day I was wondering what could be strange about Jeremy. It must be his size! But why was he so big and muscular? I came to two conclusions as the buzzer rang one was that he must have failed a grade or two second conclusion was that all this talking and thinking led me to do absolutely zero work for the day. I went to my locker and put my stuff away and started to leave for the bathroom when I remembered that Andy had told me to put his stuff away so I walked back to class and got his stuff and put it in his locker. I checked my watch only five minutes until the bus leaves so I better be quick.

I ran to the washroom and opened up the door quickly and in the bathroom by the sinks was none other than Jeremy himself. He had steroids in hand and was about to inject himself with it. I was extremely shocked, this was why he was so big. I knew that if he knew I saw him with steroids he’d beat the living S#*T out of me! Of course that’s when he started to look up. I made a quick decision. I started squinting and saying “ow.. why is it so bright in here?” Jeremy stuck the steroids into his gym bag and left pushing me into the wall as he left. I gave a sigh of relief then did my business. I checked my watch “oh.. no” The bus had left three minutes ago.

My second day of school and I’d already missed the bus. Antonio was going to be mad. He’d have to leave work early to come and pick me up and then he’d have to drive me back for the soccer game. The soccer game! It was four-forty only twenty minutes left until it was the tryouts scrimmage. By the time I’d changed and made it to the soccer field there was only eight minutes left until the game. As I walked towards the people on the soccer field I heard my name being called behind me. I spun around and came face to face with.. Andy. “why weren’t you at school?” I asked him. “Oh the doctor just wanted to have one more last look at my wrist.” “And what did he say?” “He said I shouldn’t use it to much so I can play soccer just not goalie.” Coach called us in and started off by “saying for all who don’t know I’m coach Ned and I’m going to split you up into two teams and Jeremy and Andy are going to be the captains today. I was on Andy’s team as a midfielder. We won the coin toss which meant we got to kick off first.

Andy discussed a quick and simple strategy with me then he kicked off and passed the ball back the game was on. I got the ball and took it up a little bit then as an opponent was coming towards me I fired it down to our offence at the net. One of our forwards got the ball but there was already another one of there defense on him he dodged to the left faked to the right and the?poor confused defense men fell on his face. Our offence then took the ball?and headed into the net for the point of the game. Woo.We all got back to our positions then they had a kick off it was o.k. but no where near as good as ours.?The first half finished like this they’d get the ball and bring it down to the goal then our defence would take it from them. We’d get the ball up to their goal then their defence would take it from us.

At half time we went to the side and got some water then we switched sides and were right back out there. I was on substitution.I went up to the coach and decided to tell him that Jeremy was on the “Roids.” But right when I’d worked up enough courage to do it, he said “Jimothy your on”. So I ran back to my position as a midfielder but Coach yelled that he wanted me on forward instead of midfield. It got real intense because everyone was trying their hardest. There were a few close calls but they either went high, wide or got the ball stolen. With ten minutes left in the game their was a hand-ball in out penalty area and Jeremy took the free kick. Our goalie dived but still missed it making the score one-one. We all got back into our positions and took the kick off. We all passed the ball back and forth until we got to their net then I passed it to Andy he took a shot but it hit the cross bar and the goalie caught it. At this point I was right at the net so I turned around and started walking back to our side slowly. Their goalie (by accident) booted the ball and it slammed right into the back of my head at full speed and bounced right into the net. I turned around confused as to what had happened when I saw the ball in their net I turned around and ran back to our side cheering . Everyone cheered and laughed (on our team anyway, because on their team they all looked like they wanted blood). The defense men came all came and high fived me so our goalie started running over to me then a look of shock came over his face and his ankle bent the wrong way and fell down with a cry of pain. I called the coach over and he took one look at it and said it was a sprained ankle and that he would have to sit out for the rest of the game. Andy told me to go in net I protested but he said their was only two minutes left in the game anyway, so I agreed.

Their kick off was sloppy so we got the ball almost right away. Our mid fielders and forward took the ball up field and Andy got a shot in but the goalie blocked it and then caught it. Thirty seconds left in the game! Their goalie booted it down to three-quarters down the field. Jeremy got it and? brought it up there were no mid fielders that far so it was me three defence men and Jeremy. He dodged two defence men and was getting ever closer to the net.??Ten seconds left in the game! Jeremy lined up the shot and was about to shoot when the last defence men came out of nowhere and slide tackled Jeremy to the ground. Everyone saw it, completely illegal. Jeremy got up unharmed and the coach called a penalty shot. To add to the tension he told us if it went in Jeremy’s team won and if I blocked it then Andy’s team would win. He placed the ball in it’s rightful spot and walked off the field. All twenty-eight other players were watching. ?Jeremy took two steps back then ran up and hammered the ball harder then I though possible even for a guy on steroids. It flew in a perfect arc to the top left corner. I knew that if I hit the ball with my hands it would still go in. Then I heard my brother voice ”always try your hardest no matter what”. I knew what I had to do and to this day I still don’t know how I did it. I jumped to the top of the left hand corner of the net and the ball slammed into my forehead at full speed I passed out immediately.

The next thing I knew I was awake in a hospital bed with my brother and dad standing over me. “Ohhhh.. how long has it been” I asked turning over. “It’s been three days” my brother answered. “Oh wow what happened” I asked still dazed. This time my dad answered this time “you broke your collar bone but while you were passed out the doctors have fixed your collar bone completely. I think that if you want to, we could leave and go home now, by home I mean Italy, what do you say?” I had to think about it for about two minutes then I asked “well did the ball go in?” and he said “What, oh the soccer ball bounced off your head and out you made the team!” “Well I didn’t break my collar bone for nothing then I’d love to stay here let’s go to our house in England ?I need to practice for the team.” Then my brother, Antonio, super soccer champ, said something I never expected to hear him say “I’m proud of you Jimothy and I’m glad to be your brother.”

One Month Later:Hey this is Jimothy just your amazing soccer playing, popular grade 8 kid. The new captain of the boys grade eight soccer team as a matter of fact. Jeremy got kicked off the team at the end of the scrimmage when Coach Ned found the roids in his bag. Jeremy can not play for any sports teams with the school anymore. Our soccer team is doing good with our season, my head and collar bone are better and life is good!
