The dazzling orange glow surged through the sky like a bolt from God. People ran like hell to get into their homes, obviously thinking something bad was going to happen, but I just stood rooted to the spot. The glow had seemed weak compared to the pictures I had seen on the news about it flying across other countries. Maybe it was stopping. I was still stood there when I heard a whip hit someone. I was still stood there when I saw it coming. I was still stood there when it rounded the corner. I was still stood there when a voice screamed out from nowhere. I was still stood there as it fell in front of me. I stood, staring at the dead creature on my toes. Now it was clear what I couldn’t see through the smoke. The glow had brought something with it. The creatures it had brought with it were the same colour as their mode of transport, with two weird things poking out each side of it. They had these stumps at the end, too long for toes, but too short to be fingers. It made me wince just at the sight of it. It was then that I realised there was a figure approaching me out of the smoke. Humanoid definitely, but the man’s identity was sealed from me by the smoke. He reached out a long arm and told me his name was Cain. That’s all he said. I shook his hand and told him my name. And from that moment on I was in danger.

As soon as I took his hand, the cold bit me and I shivered like a madman. My arm was slowly turning to ice and soon I was sure I would die. He let go and took me down a passageway. Cain told me to stay put and if one of the creatures came then to use my legs and run. If the whip got me, I would not live another day. I would burn from the insides until I was a pile of ash on the floor. So I didn’t move. Not an inch. An hour went by and I got pretty ticked off that Cain wasn’t back yet. So I set out on my own. Luckily most of the smoke had cleared and the screaming had stopped. I hid out of the way of most of the creatures until one of them came right up to me. It reached for its whip from its pocket, but he couldn’t find it as I had taken it off him already. I punched him in the face, poked his eyes and hit him with his own Death Whip. He let out a blood curdling scream and I heard foot steps approaching. The darkness fell as an army of the creatures approached me in all directions, followed by what I can only describe a behemoth. The Boss creature rode a horse up to the front of the crowd and got off. It towered over me and lifted its foot.

I rolled out the way a second before the foot made a hole in the road. It was like those ones you see in dinosaur movies that are a metre deep and it the shape of a foot. I grabbed my whip out of my pocket and it hit the Boss square in the chest. He stumbled and hit the floor, coughing blood and gasping for air. Soon a hole appeared in his stomach and the ashes from his body’s centre hit the other creatures in the faces, temporarily blinding them. After their leader was in their eyes, an orange light flew right in front of my eyes and I saw the nothing. The cries stopped. The creatures stopped moving. The air grew cold and then there was nothing. No birds. No creatures. No people. Only darkness surrounded me. My eyes opened and I saw a blurred outline. It was talking to me in a calm voice, telling me to wake up, that they were gone. The low voice soon took form of a mouth moving. The mouth was on a face with eyes and ears. A man dressed in dark blue with an icy touch was holding me in his arms. Cain helped me to my feet and we walked on, while he was telling me something about me killing the leader then nearly getting killed myself when we passed my home.

I went inside, expecting a welcome home hug from Mum and my Dad telling me that he was worried. But it wasn’t so simple. I went in and saw scorch marks on the wall in the shape of my family. There was dust next to the marks and the sound of screaming still filled the building. I just laid there crying until Cain came in to check on me. We could have been there an hour, a minute or even just a second, but I felt something die. We just sat there until I looked up and saw something that would change my life forever. Cain looked up with me but looked puzzled. Of course he couldn’t see the ghosts of my friends and family. There was everyone I had ever known smiling and waving at me. I knew I was the last one in the town alive now that there was no more screaming and sounds of death. So I got up and walked out the door. Cain followed me. All my friends were dead, all my family was dust and I was stuck to roam the Earth with a mysterious stranger going by the name of Cain. And with that I knew that my adventures had only just begun...
