THOUGHTS OF A HOMELESS MAN

AsI huddle in a doorway, away from the cold night air,

You hurry by, with head held high

You don't even see me there.

Do you know that I am human,

As you cast your glance away?

Do you care that I am homeless?

If you do, you never say.

Once you threw a copper -

like a crumb thrown to a bird

But you never gave me comfort with a word.

I have feelings, just like you,

I sometimes smile, or cry

But just like I am nothing, you pass by.

I remember, long ago,

I hurried passed like you

Without a glance or kindly word

I had too much to do.

Then fate changed the way things were

I found myself alone

Then I lost my well paid job

And with that went my home.

So as you hurry passed once more,

Oblivious to my sigh

Slows down, for once, and remember.

"BUT FOR THE GRACE OF GOD THERE GO I"
