There is this tradition in our university where as Freshmen, we need to walk beneath this old arch. This was my experience.

As I walk beneath the arch

Of centuries have trodden

Countless hopefuls wait in line

As each dream became official

New beginnings is the game

Each step a confirmation

That you are part of something bigger

So the others say

As I enter through the arch

I felt a tingling of anticipation

After I stepped through, nothing

Nothing spectacular

Same old me

Same messed up short hair

Same dreams

Same nameless goal to achieve

The magic is broken

The realization came

Tradition is just an act

Anticipation is such a let down

To be part of something bigger

It doesn't come from an old piece of architecture

It doesn't come from superstition

It just is
