It was a shivery moonlit Halloween night. Samantha sat on the sofa munching popcorn and watching Friday the 13th for the zillionth time.
All of Samantha's schoolmates were at Marissa Love's annual Halloween bash. Marissa Love was the most popular girl at Harrington High. All the boys wanted to date her, including Stephen Fiore-the only boy Samantha had ever taken an interest in.
For the past fews weeks Samantha had indulged in fantasies of how Stephen would invite her to accompany him to Marrisa's posh home for the bash. He'd show up on Samantha's doorstep with a fresh bouquet of velvety crimson roses. "Samantha," he'd say. "I've secretly had a crush on you since the first time I laid eyes on you in seventh grade. I think about you day and night. I haven't asked you out until now because I've been so afraid you'd reject me. But, Samantha, I don't want to risk losing your love to some other guy who wouldn't cherish you like I will...if only you'll give me the chance. So Samantha, I'd be honored to escort you to Marissa Love's Halloween bash. Please say yes, you'll go."
But by last night she'd given up hope on Stephen and she didn't really blame him. At five-foot-two and one-hundred fifty pounds, Samantha wasn't exactly part of the in-crowd. If you weren't a size 0 at Harrington High you were branded a loser. No boys had ever asked her on a date, most likely because they'd be ashamed to be seen with a girl stuffed into size-10 clothing. Samantha didn't think she looked bad. She had long brown hair that cascaded in delicate waves over her shoulders. Her eyes sparkled like sky-blue diamonds and her ruby red lips were soft and full and inviting. She couldn't help her curvaceous figure. No matter how much she dieted or exercised her plump bottom and rounded breasts stuck to her like glue. So Samantha had resigned herself to watching old horror movies on DVD this Halloween night, just as she'd done the previous Halloween-and the Halloween before that.
Stephen Fiore crouched in the bushes outside Samantha Brown's house. Luckily, her front porch light was off, letting the trick-or-treaters know she wasn't handing out candy. Still, Stephen had to be careful. A few of the greedy rugrats had recently passed behind him on the sidewalk. One was dressed like a clown, complete with a curly rainbow wig and spongy red oversized nose. The other was a little devil sporting a pair of plastic horns on his head and a long red pointy tail which dragged along on the pavement behind him. The costume sent shivers up and down Steven's spine. He hoped he wasn't going to burn in hell for the sins he committed tonight.
Samantha jumped as Jason Voorhees sliced through another unsuspecting camper.
"You shouldn't watch those scary movies alone," said Samantha's mother as she'd picked up her purse before leaving to run the balloon pop game at her church's candy carnival.
"I'll be fine, Mom," Samantha had insisted. "Go on and have fun and don't worry about me."
"Ok, dear," said Samantha's mom. "I'll be home around ten or so."
"Okay, Mom. Love you," said Samantha as her mom had walked out the door.
Now, Samantha found herself wishing she wasn't alone. In fact, she wished Stephen Fiore was there to wrap his big strong arms around her and tell her that everything was going to be okay, that the boogeyman wasn't real.
Stephen popped his head up out of the bushes and looked up and down the street. The coast was clear. The trick-or-treaters were trickling off now, darting home to attack their circus peanuts and their mary janes. He took a deep breath, gathered his courage and knocked on Samantha's front door.
Inside, Samantha jumped again when she heard the rap on her door.
"I'm all of out of candy!" she yelled.
"I don't want candy," said a familiar voice on the other side of the door. "I want you."
