I wrote this following a news report today.

A Sick Thrill’

I have just been reading a very disturbing article about the activities of youths in some areas of Cork city and suburbs. There are groups of them roaming around with dogs, looking for cats and other small animals to set them on. They are seen to be taking ‘a sick thrill’ from this atrocious behaviour.

It is believed that they are doing so to ‘blood’ the dogs in preparation for using them to fight. Dog fighting is, of course, illegal; and there have been many raids and criminal convictions. All this does not prevent this disgusting practice from happening though.

It has been reported that there are whole areas where charities refuse to rehouse cats because of the danger. Like they say, it is not the fault of the dogs; they are simply behaving in a way that they have been trained to do.

Even if you hate cats, and view them as not much more than vermin you cannot be anything other than alarmed by this practice. It has long been proven that those who torture and kill animals are more likely to go on to torture and kill people.

This is just another example of why humanity should give up the idea that they are ‘superior’ to all other species.

Totally agree. Though it's not just near you, it's every where. Owners of dogs that are caught doing harm, should be banned from owning dogs. Pit Bulls have a bad rap, but it's usually the owner that makes them a lethal weapon. I vote to bring back public stockades, at least it will stop over crowded facilities and be a good means to make criminals think twice, as housing them doesn't seem to work. But here I go on my tangent.

Oh, I'd never blame the dogs. They are just doing what their owners want them to do. I just cannot understand how people can be so barbaric.

What is wrong with these people? Excellent, Hull!

I don't know, Mike, but it does not say much for humanity.

It is, isn't it. Some people truly are barbaric. When I was a child I saw a kitten wander into a garden where there were two labradors. It still haunts me now. I just cannot understand how people are capable of being so cruel.

I don't understand how housing cats will deter this behavior? Poor things. And poor puppies, too. Dogs are not naturally viscous. But then, neither are people.

The charities that took in the cats would not let them be adopted by anyone living in those areas to safe-guard them. Dogs try to please their owners, and I'll agree that these people are probably victims of circumstance. It's not an excuse though, as there are many others brought up in the same environment, with the same expectations, that do not behave in such a cruel and vicious way.

This is awful, Hully. Cruelty to animals absolutely sickens me. As you say, those who abuse animals will no doubt go on to abuse humans. Should be ctiminised!

I was really disgusted when I saw the headline, Sue.

I think cats are the world's most perfect creatures :)
My first dog was a pitbull puppy who I had bought out of a newspaper. He was in a barbed wire fence with four other adult pitbulls that were very vicious. I suspect the dogs were used for fighting as he had a leg that he had trouble standing on, it was very quivery. Even after I rescued him he was never the same. He stayed vicious and I had to send him away to a farm to work as a farm dog. I hate animal abuse.

So do I. That is the one thing that I'll be most vocal about, in any of its many forms.
Thanks so much for reading, L.E.

That's why its important for kids to have pets Mama Hullabaloo. It teaches them to respect animals with the likelihood they'll respect other people when they grow up. Political correctness prevents me from saying what should happen to those youths. Usianguke

The thing is, Moa, these dogs are their pets, and look what they are training them to do. To be fair, it's only a couple of gangs; most people treat their pets properly. There has been a bit of trouble over here with illegal dogfights and that is what they are training the dogs for - a bit of money and no tax for the winner.

The thing is, once they get to sixteen, seventeen and definitely eighteen, parents don't have a lot of influence. And where dog fighting is involved - a lot of it is organized by adults.
There's a lot of sick people in the world, dewey. Thanks for giving this a read.

This sick little threat has also been going on in my neck of the woods as well, Hully. it turns my stomach at the thought of these abominable individuals, who find pleasure in this macabre past time.
there are known dog fighting gangs who use stolen cats or smaller dogs as bait for their sick money betting games of dog fighting. its barbaric and brutal and anyone who is caught doing this should be thrown into prison for a very long time, instead of getting a wrist slap, a paltry fine and a ban from keeping dogs.

Absolutely. The fines are an insult to the extent of the crime. What really gets to me is the people that claim humanity is a superior species making all other species theirs to treat as they like.
Thanks for giving this a read, C-S.
