Atropa Belladonna

At a glance

quite harmless,

although not a great beauty.

Belladonna

keeps her brightest shade

inside.

Atropos,

the deadliest of Fates,

lends her name

to this nightshade,

fright-shade,

toxic plant

whose essence

will take your sanity

before stealing away

with your life.

That was Bella's full name - the mother of the brothers Boo. Like Pettie she was all white rather than black but she would have made a great witch's cat.

olive tree

Interestingly the nightshade family contains tomatoes, potatoes, capsicum, chilli and peppers but they don’t contain the potent alkaloids of belladonna (in Italian this means beautiful woman).

Some evocative phrasing here... along with the implied threat! :)

I had a cat called Belladonna, pure white. She was the mother of the kittens I still have here.

Thanks, Adam, and sorry it's taken me so long to reply.
