Today's News Headlines brought a total SHOCK surprise! Not true. See what you think to some rather UNSURPRISING scientific findings.

Breaking News!

Stop the press! Change the headlines! An important story that DOES NOT revolve around US President Elect Donald Trump. It does not even revolve around Brexit. No, this prime news spot is devoted to a new scientific discovery. Hold your breath.....Wait for it!

Uh, how is this news. The link between stress and strokes has been long-established, as, indeed, has the link with an increased risk of heart attacks. For how long have we been advised to reduce our levels of stress where possible?

Okay, it has now been medically proven that there is a reaction in the brain to stress where the ‘fight or flight’ response kicks in. This is to adjust chemicals in the body to make a quick response to a short-term threat. In other words, if you are suddenly being chased by a tiger it helps if you can run faster and think quicker than usual in working out an escape route. This, again, is old news.

Fight or flight’ responses were never meant to become long term, but living under constant stress means that that is what we are subjecting ourselves to. The ‘fight or flight’ response, we NOW know, increases the number of white cells in our blood, which is okay as a temporary measure but not okay on a more longer term. The reason – white blood cells are more likely to clot and cause blockages!

Another result of long term stress is the increased likelihood of suffering from anxiety disorders, and it can even be a factor in causing depression! Wow! I never realized that one – I don’t think!

Anyway, the conclusion is that we should all seek ways of reducing the stress levels in our lives. And this advice is coming at one of the most unstable times in recent history. It is not easy to change your job to a more enjoyable one when there are not many vacancies around. It is not easy to cut down our workloads when more and more of us are having to take on extra jobs to keep up with the debts that modern living entails. It is not easy to find somewhere where you would feel more comfortable living. It is not easy to avoid stressful travel situations on an every-day level, let alone when there are strikes to contend with.

And then there are those of us who are forced to live under stress for, potentially, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, three hundred and sixty five days of the year due to family health situations. What exactly are we supposed to do about that one!

So as I sit here typing this I can now have a visual image of all those little white cells increasing in number and going hurtling around my veins. I can picture how they might group up to form an impassable barrier.......

I think that that is increasing my stress levels somewhat more than they were before, so perhaps this is one story I would have done better to miss!

moa rider

Gidday Mama Hullabaloo, there are plenty of alarmist medical reports out there. White cell are more likely to clot! How much more likely? One in ten, a hundred or a billion? Heath-wise, we all have been dealt a hand, we just have to manage that hand as best we can and take advice from someone who knows your case. Usianguke - oh yes, smiling is good for your health - laughing even better!

Haha! Yeah, seems that there's some way they find to say that everything is bad for your health,
Moa. Give them time and they'll probably find some detrimental effects from laughing too! This was meant to be slightly tongue-in-cheek, so I hope it came across that way!
Thanks again, for reading and taking the time to write one of your much-appreciated comments!
