From A Seed

It grew from a seed, his attraction to her, her attraction to him. Just a tiny glimpse was all it took to arouse interest. She waited for a while, dared to peek at him, only to find that his gaze was already focussed on her. Their eyes met, their gaze held for just a tiny second before both he and she looked away.

Who made the first move? He walked towards the bar and on his way had to pass alongside the seat that she was sitting on. She could fee him as he walked behind, slight color rising to her cheeks. She wanted to watch him but kept her eyes focussed firmly forward.

He breathed in a bit deeper as he passed her by, inhaling her perfume. His hand wanted to reach out, to just gently touch her hair, but instead he kept it firmly in his jacket pocket. If asked, he would have denied it, but he had almost felt dizzy during those moments when he was so close.

She waited a few moments before getting to her own feet, taking orders from her friends and approaching the bar. She stood beside him, a foot away, but as they both waited for the barman to take their orders, they seemed to gravitate towards each other. Long before he turned his attention to either of them, there was hardly a hand’s breadth separating them.

He said the first word, but she had been quick to reply. Neither looked at each other and then they did, their eyes met and they were both lost in another universe, if only for a moment. Their shared look was interrupted by the barman’s cough, but they did exchange numbers.

Would he phone her? Would she talk to him? Both wondered the same things until they discovered that it was a ‘Yes’ on both counts.

That was two years ago to the day. Now he pops the question: “Will you marry me?”

And now she has no hesitation in replying: “Yes!”
