Heedless Of The Warning

Many have been lost in this forest,

or at least that’s how the legend goes.

But who knows?

Just a folk tale spread to scare

and to prevent trespassing,

you think.

You’ll not listen to the words of caution;

foolish superstition will not still your

desire to explore.

Darkness swiftly descends as the trees seem to thicken

into a darkening shroud

that blocks out light, turns day to night.

That smell!

Rot and ruin;

the iron, metallic stench of blood.

It smells like an abattoir

but it’s just the leaves mouldering away.

Nothing to worry about until you find yourself

pressed forward

inch by inch.

Panicked, you try to turn and flee

but instead are confronted

by the trunk of a tree that wasn’t there a moment ago.

Listen!

The hairs rise up on the back of your neck.

The rational part of your brain tells you that it is the wind that you hear.

Has the wind ever produced such a tormented moan?

Gripped, tugged,

you’re off your feet, being dragged by some kind of vines

that dig through flesh to bone;

and the screams get louder and louder until

you join them with your own.

A tree, huge and hungry, waits,

always in need of sustenance.

Fingers grip and pull you down deep into the ground

and you choke on the loam and those rotted leaves;

eyes, nose and ears a flood of earth while your become

pummelled and pressed,

upwards and outwards.

Agonized, crushed,

you should be dead for there’s no blood left.

Sap-filled veins will prolong the torment

as you look into another pair of despairing eyes

that tell you all you need to know

and more.

Blindly oblivious, deaf to the warnings

you walked willingly into the forest,

one you won’t walk out of,

for now you are nothing more than fuel

for the eternity-tree.
