Like Fur

It felt like fur to my sleepy fingers, looked like fur to my sleepy eyes. Barney wanting a morning stroke, no doubt.

No wet nose pressed against mine though. Strange, that.

Drips, black dots splattering on to my pillow. Looks like motor oil, smells fetid, rotten; like I’d imagine an abattoir would when it was way past the need of a hose-down.

Where has the dog been now?

Blinking bleary wakefullness into my eyes I look up. I’m staring now into a huge, gaping maw, drooling, slathering, full of jagged teeth. Not Barney then, but my death by mutant mogwai.
