Make A Wish

Not sure quite what we should do, Den and me, we loitered. Hesitated on the footpath before I took a hold of his hand.

I know...” I said. “Come with me.”

He held back, making a show of resistance but my grip was firm and reluctantly he began to move. “Amy, where’re we going. There’s nothin’ down here.”

I looked over my shoulder. “You sure about that? Because, Den, you’re wrong if you are.”

Oh, yeah? What you gonna bet?” He’s laughing now, so sure of himself, but see, I’ve been further down this path than he has ever ventured.

I’m going to bet...” I paused to give my words extra meaning. “My future. From this day onwards.”

Some bet! So,” Den plants his feet firmly on the ground, pulls me around. “If there’s nothin’ here, you are goin’ to say ‘yes’ and you ‘n’ me are gonna get hitched.” There’s steel behind his gaze, a veiled threat of what might happen if I don’t agree.

Hating to be forced into saying it, I nod my head, gulp. “Sure. If I’m wrong I’ll give you my life.”

Happy now, and starting to indulge in his fantasies, Den no longer resists but walks along almost at my side. I won’t let him quite catch up because I know he’ll stop too early if I do.

I pull him along the path, and continue forward when the brambles stretch forward, snatching and snagging. The path might be clogged with weeds, cracked where the roots pushed through, but it’s still there. And finally it comes into view – the well.

It’s one of those old fashioned ones, with a surrounding wall built of brick, and a roof structure placed in a pointless attempt at keeping nature from entering.

I back my way towards it, a triumphant smile on my face. Den, he’s looking kind of sick, like I’ve tricked him or something. Maybe I had for I knew it was there, made a wish just the other day and got the answer, clear as the clang of a bell on a clear day.

It’s a wishing well,” I say.

You knew it was here all along, didn’t cha.” Den walks up to the brickwork and gives it a kick. He really shouldn’t have done that. “Is there any water in it?”

Drop a penny in it and make a wish. If there is you’ll hear the splash. And who knows... maybe your wish will come true.”

He digs round in his pocket, pulls out a coin and as he tosses it, I give him a shove. For a moment I think I’ve failed, but then he loses his balance and falls with a scream.

What can I say? I found it first and made my wish, it’s not my fault they were polar opposites. Still can’t help flinching until I hear the thud of Den’s landing and get the first waft of ozone that marks my new-found freedom.

So, Amy tossed Den into a wishing well and made a wish. And it came true! That worked much better than a coin. But I don't want to detract from your story, Hully. I enjoyed what you wrote.

Amy had already made her wish, Joe, when she found the well without Den. She just had to lead him to it so that it had a chance of coming true.
