A poem based on K J Walker's suggested three small words!!!!

Put The Kettle On.

Whenever I would go back home

Worn down by my day,

My mother in the kitchen

I knew would always say,

Come on, we’ll put the kettle on.

We’ll have a cup of tea

And we can sit and have a chat,

A time for you and me.”

It was a cure for everything,

A panacea for all ills,

She would never talk to doctors

Or take their many pills.

She’d be there with her kettle,

Filling it with water,

Piling in those tea bags

And milk, about a quarter.

She didn’t care for sweetened tea,

No sugar lumps or spoons;

She’d hum while it was brewing,

So many childhood tunes.

A neighbour sometimes would call round

For a cuppa and a chat,

If a task was being done

That’d be the end of that.

But then there was that fateful day

When coffee I did choose,

Give me any choice in it and

Tea would always lose.

Mum saw it as betrayal,

A rejection of her views,

We didn’t have an argument

But a closeness we did lose.

It never was the same again

Though many years have passed,

Just one of those small differences

That always seem to last.

Now if I go calling

My own coffee I will bring,

Her cupboard is for tea she says

And not ‘that other thing’.

She said to me the other day,

When I am dead and gone,

Put the tea pot in with me

Then I’ll make it really strong."

I didn’t have an answer,

I knew not what to say --

Tea, it is her favourite thing

And gets her through the day.
