The Progress Bar.

A lot of you might be unfamiliar with this bar. In the day of high-speed internet connections most downloads are completed too quickly for a bar to be necessary. Here in rural Ireland, until a few years ago our internet was slow. A download of any size and I could go and make a coffee, take the dog out, cook and eat a meal, and possibly still find it not complete.

And this put me in mind of the supposed heading to World War 3.

It starts off with hostility, with demonstrations of developing weapons. More hostility, threats, and then things seem to die down. The bar seems to have stopped moving, or is just crawling along, barely noticeably. Then an act of defiance bringing extreme condemnation, sanctions imposed and more angry words exchanged. The bar moves that bit further.

Something else happens somewhere and draws all the attention for a while. The bar seems to be idling; could be that progress to that World War 3 scenario has stopped. Strange that the cancel button won’t work though, that the download cannot be abandoned. Whoever is in control of it is ensuring that it stays in place.

And then, amid an escalation of name-calling, threats and counter-threats, a breakthrough in the form of diplomatic talks. It is a breakthrough, isn’t it? The bar even seems to move back a fraction. But what is there to say. No agreement can be reached so why talk – neither party is prepared to give ground, and if anything hostility has become even greater.

Propaganda becomes rampant; both sides determined to be seen in the best possible light while painting their adversaries as the worst of the worst. The divide is like a chasm now. Is there any possible way that it can be breached?

The progress bar has shot forward again in leaps and bounds. Will that download speed slow again or has the signal strengthened? I tried again to press cancel but it does not respond at all. It would seem that it will only respond to one of two people’s hands and there is no sign that either are about to make the move to press it.
