The Unexpected

So what are we going to do?” Wanda asked. “Stick the loot in our pockets?”

Charlie nodded his head, while Mitch held up a hand. "That’s just what they’d expect us to you.”

Wanda frowned and chewed on her bottom lip.No one said a word for a few minutes yet it was far from silent. Mitch tapped his fingers on the table, Charlie tapped his foot on the floor.

"So," said Wanda, “How am I going to get the jewellery out? Wear it?”

Mitch smiled. "Exactly! That's the last thing that they’ll expect! Just slip on a bracelet, a couple of rings, and walk right on out that door.”

“I don't know... " Wanda said. Charlie simply nodded his head.

* * *

There were only two salespeople; a couple of customers would provide adequate opportunity.

Wanda walked in to the store. Her outfit had been specially chosen for its lack of pockets, and she carried no purse. Mitch had assured her that, with no hiding places, she’d arouse no suspicions.

She bided her time, walking glancing towards staff. Once the first ring was on her finger and no hand gripped her shoulder, Wanda became bolder.

Two more rings and a bracelet on each wrist, she lingered for a couple of minutes before heading for the door.

With one foot outside, then the other, she let herself smile. She’d done it!

The hand on her shoulder felt like a concrete block. The man guided her back in to the store.

But how...?” she asked.

Simple,” the detective said. “Always expect the unexpected.”
