White Horses In Snow

Four there are;

almost invisible to my eye;

their very whiteness

makes them hard to spy

in the field

of snow.

The flakes fall

to land on backs,

where they melt on contact;

the heat of the heart

a thawing force.

Camouflaged

by the blizzard

that whites out

the grass, other than clumps

that stand in defiance;

the breaths cause

a mist,

and their hooves

leave a trail

as they begin to gallop

with a toss of the mane,

a flick of the tail.

A warmth brought from movement,

blood forced around veins

until as a group they huddle again.

Heat shared

as they gather,

resigned to the invisible blanket

that continues

to fall

upon their shoulders.

Stooping and snorting,

munching at the meagre blades,

searching out the nourishment

that is the deciding factor

of surviving

as a white horse

in a field

of snow.

Nice take on the pic, I'm guessing?

Actually, it had to be written on the title, but I thought the pic went well with it. It's just a bit too early to be writing about that white stuff, really, but...

Wow, I love this, Hully. Brilliant poetry, the imagery is so, so powerful. Bravo!

Thanks, Sue. I hoped you'd enjoy this. A bit early for talk of snow really, but there's something very special about that image.
