Wrapping

Christmas always rustled. It rustled every time,

mysteriously, with silver and gold paper, tissue paper

and a rich abundance of shiny paper, decorating and

hiding everything and giving a feeling of reckless extravagance.’

Tove Jansson

Think of many seasonal images. Outdoor ones might be full of snowmen, robins, even Santa flying across the night sky in his reindeer-pulled sleigh. But what about indoor seasonal scenes? The chances are that you will come up with the image of a decorated tree, the bottom of which will be hidden by a pile of wrapped packages.

Wrapping is big business. Have you noticed how much of this paper is on sale in the stores? And the variety is huge! Don’t forget the ribbon, the foil sticky gift decoration and the seasonal tag.

There is a ring of truth in the quote above. It is the wrapping, the display, the concealment that brings a lot of the Christmas excitement. The thing is that, for a moment, that gift could contain... anything! There’s no knowing, not really. Even if you think you know what is inside, there is always the possibility that you will find yourself pleasantly surprised.

All of this wrapping is what brings the magic! Think how differently you’d feel if there was simply a pile of goods there; no gold or silver, no pretty paper, and no anticipation.

Once all the wrappings have been removed, the paper folded up or put in the bin, there is almost a feeling of anti-climax. Even if you are delighted with your presents, the anticipation has gone, along with that slight adrenaline rush. There’s no more mystery, no more promise. The magic of Christmas has gone... until dinner!
