“Don’t touch me,” I would say.

Too much, too close,

nothing to keep my past hurts at bay.

That touch you put on me,

“I don’t want it,” I would say.

My heart has trusted once before,

and has been burned on an open flame.

“So no, I do not want your touch,” I would still say.

I have been brought to my knees far too much these days.

That touch you have, it will be sweet and perfect,

then be taken all away.

“So please, I beg you, don’t touch me,” I would say.

I need to learn how to accept this closeness that you bring,

this touch, this feeling, let it into my being.

“But for now, please don’t touch me,” I would say.

I am working on my heart, so your touch won’t hurt me one day.
