I see him periodically

Bobbing and weaving through the crowds

He stops by one person and whispers in their ear.

One woman weeps in sorrow before swooning.

One distraught young lady looks relieved and nods,

Wandering off with this dark stranger,

Never to be seen or heard from again.

He’s making his rounds; he’s getting closer.

I barely hear his message—“I’m here to take away your pain.”

I’ve seen him take people dear to me

He is so seductive to the wounded soul in their last hour.

I wanted to scream, “Bastard! Go away! I will not welcome you!”

Sometime I look for him—“Bastard! Where are you? I am ready!”

The dark stranger knows it’s not my time yet.

Someday he will come for me

His seductive voice will say, “Your time has come. I’m here to relieve your pain.”
