A lesson you can learn from even a puppy. The first dog's name wasn't remembered. The second was Dokhoo (Pronounced "doc-who"). Named after the 10th doctor in the Doctor Who series. Inspired by a story told to me and, yes, I was given permission by the person to pass this lesson on.

Requite or Rue

Twice I've lost a pup in 18 months--

9 months for which both left!

The first was promised to me, but I had no funds.

She, not being truly mine, then left my arms into another's.

9 months spent with me, 9 months of loving this beauty.

I wept, disheartened by what I saw as loss.

One could say I had an unfathomable way of loving a pup so intensly,

but it was my nature to love so profoundly.

And then he came into my life;

Unusual in color, a splendid thing!

His eyes were tri-colored and was quite the sight!

With a calm, intent, and almost withdrawn demeanor.

I couldn't help but be mesmerized.

Auburn and beige hair and eyes that were green, gold, and brown--

Each color a ring around the irises of his eyes.

I didn't plan for him to leave.

But I swore allegiance to the flag

For the country that is my home.

Under oath, I couldn't be home when he was turned over to his new family.

I didn't get to say good-bye or watch him go.

Now I'm left with the one smallest regret;

Not seeing him off--and as much I loved him!

But with his new family, he adjusted quickly.

Being a pup of 9 months, that's not a hard thing.

I have no regrets of this life chose for me by the God in which I believe.

But I rue not requiting my love for the atypical Dokhoo.
