Only through frosted glass
Does the world exist.

I’ve seen corruption
Slither up spines
And watched space age guns
Blast heads off neighbors.
I witness abductions of innocent people
And stare at the faces of oppression
And discrimination.
I watch as the world
Slowly sinks itself
In a pool of global warming.

But here-
Under my mounds of warm blankets
Mugs of hot coco
And goodnight kisses-
It can’t touch me.

I don’t feel the corpses’
Rotting, chilled hands,
Smell singed flesh
Or boiled blood-
I can’t hear the echo of a thousand guns
Or the wails of an entire generation
Being wiped out.
I can’t imagine
That gut deep feeling
Of hunger-
True, “I’d kill for a crumb”
Hunger.

I can only see
Through the frosted glass window
And watch
as if it were a TV-
For surely,
The world would never
(Could never)
Let this happen.
