Summary

I thought about what would happen if you found the stairs to hell.

The steps just keep winding downward

Like a spinning alternate wheel of stone

It is cold and numb but we must push

The bottom is deep and I feel all alone

Each footfall is darker and more sinister

A coating of moist death on each ledge

Like a grey hanging mist upon the new morn

Beckoning me deeper and allegiance to pledge

The air thick with decay and callous dust

Making each breath heavily laden with toil

The back of my throat coated by death and muck

From the souls of the dead buried under the soil

Each new step makes my body ache and cry

Legs struggling as if thru congealed porridge

The pace of my endeavour slowed to a stop

And I look deep within for an ounce or courage

Am I at the bottom? I fear for the worst

The darkness so thick it weighs in my soul

Is my journey ended, or am I just at the start

I cannot take one more step its taking a toll

A presence nearby startled my senses as

A breath on my neck chilled me to the bone

The sweat from my brow now frozen in place

As I realised I was no longer down here alone

My pulse was racing my breathing now forced

I tried my best to stay calm, quiet and perfectly still

But my heart so stressed it was fit to burst

My body now numb with fear acted against my will

I started to run and my legs moved on their own

It was like trying to run blinded by a thick leather mask

I stumbled and fell and tumbled until I hit the bottom

My mind in pain and my body ruined not up to the task

I lay where I fell and I felt my heart sink from within

As a presence enveloped my like a malevolent force

It picked me up and laughed silently in my ear

So I had no chance to understand its source

“So you want to understand what is down in the pits?”

It said so softly and clearly I thought I was asleep.

No I thought I just wanted a look to see the unseen.

“Well I am afraid now your soul is mine to keep”
